A Japanese man who married Hatsune Miku in 2018 is now still hoping to raise awareness of "fictosexual", someone who is sexually attracted to fictional characters.

According to the New York Times, Akihiko Kondo is married to the fictional character Hatsune Miku, a fictional pop singer from a computer program who has toured real-world concerts with Lady Gaga and starred in video games. Now, 4 years after his marriage to Hatsune Miku, Kondo has revealed various things about his relationship with his anime wife. The 38-year-old revealed that he found love, inspiration and solace in Miku.

Kondo dated Hatsune Miku for a decade before they held an informal wedding ceremony in Tokyo. According to Kondo, his relationships with fictional characters helped him get out of a deep depression. Speaking to the NYT, Kondo said he often takes his Miku dolls out to eat, sleep and watch movies together, and sometimes even goes on romantic vacations.

Kondo knows that people find him weird, and he also knows that Miku isn't real. However, he said that his feelings for fictional characters are very real even though people think otherwise. "When we're together, she makes me smile," Kondo said in a recent interview, adding, "In that sense, he's real."

According to the NYT, Mr Kondo first found comfort in Miku in 2008, after being bullied at his job that left him depressed. He had long decided that he would never love a real human, partly because he didn't want the life that Japanese society's standards demanded of their partner. Later, the 38-year-old started composing songs with Miku and bought the character doll online.

The big breakthrough in his relationship came a decade later when Kondo was able to interact with fictional characters for the first time in 2017 thanks to Gatebox, a machine that allows device owners to interact with fictional characters via holograms and even marry them unofficially. A year later, Kondo then proposes to Miku's avatar who can communicate with him. "Please treat me well," Miku replied.

Kondo argues that his life with Miku has advantages over marrying a human partner. According to Kondo, Miku was always there for him, would never betray him and Kondo would never see Miku sick or dead.

However, speaking to the Japanese newspaper Mainichi, Kondo also had a challenge as well. Kondo revealed that the hardest moment came during the COVID-19 pandemic when Gatebox announced a service termination for Miku.

He said that after four years of marriage, his relationship with Miku was deadlocked. But he also adds that it doesn't lessen his feelings for Miku. Kondo tells Mainichi that his love for Miku has not changed and he plans to be loyal to the fictional character until he dies.

Meanwhile, it is stated that Kondo is not the only person in the world who is in a relationship with a fictional character. The NYT reports that thousands of "fictosexual" people in Japan have entered into similar unofficial relationships with various anime characters. In addition, tens of thousands of other fictosexual people around the world have joined online groups where they discuss their commitment to their life partners from anime, manga, and video games.
