Being one of the new inventions in Boruto, Kote, or Shinobigote (shinobi gauntlet) first appeared in Boruto: Naruto the Movie. While in the manga version, it appeared in Boruto Chapter 1, and in the anime in Episode 44, only to be used for the first time in Episode 53.

This 'miraculous' tool got Boruto ridiculed by his peers and lost his ninja headband when caught wearing a Kote in the Chuunin Exam. But, what actually is a Kote? Let’s dissect this together in this Naruto Jutsu Profile.

What is Kote in Naruto and Boruto?

Kote or Shinobigote is a new-generation ninja weapon created and developed by the Konohagakure’s Scientific Ninja Weapons Team.

As a weapon, Kote offers massive benefits for both ninjas and ordinary people; because it allows anyone to perform numerous ninjutsu, including secret techniques, such as kekkei genkai and hiden without having to spend any chakra.

So it’s not surprising that Naruto disqualified Boruto when caught him using it in the Chuunin Exam since it’s considered not using his own abilities to get the better of other ninjas, and relying on an overly practical tool instead.

Aside from being a weapon, Kote also has another usefulness in researching ninjutsu, due to the technology applied in it allows ninjas to store every jutsus in the world. Therefore they can research the potential of those jutsus.

For that very reason, according to the gang of thieves, Byakuya Gang, there are many third parties eyeing Kote technology who are willing to pay a high price to obtain it.

Reloading 'Bullets' and Shooting with the Kote

First, in order to shoot a jutsu from the hole at the end of the Kote, the user has to prepare several special scrolls containing various jutsus that act as the 'bullet' for Kote. It is possible to fill it with different kinds of scrolls.

These unique scrolls are not only able to store any jutsus in them; even hiden and kekkei genkai; but they are also able to shrink down in size automatically after usage. If a jutsu has been saved, the user of the Kote can simply insert that scroll into the provided slot, then perform a specific hand seal.

The black circle on top will illuminate, displaying a colored kanji according to the element of the jutsu being performed, and the Kote will shoot the scroll and launch the jutsu in it.

The scroll can be left 'exploded' until the jutsu comes out automatically. Or the user can also hold the scroll being shot out to aim it manually.

A Bit More Detailed on How Kote Works

As briefly mentioned earlier, depending on the chakra element of a jutsu and the hand seal being used, the Kote will shoot different 'bullets' that have been inserted into the device. Let’s see the examples we’ve seen from both the anime and the movie of Boruto:

  • Water Release

The Water Release Scrolls are launched by bending both the index finger and the thumb. The symbol that appears on Kote is the kanji ‘mizu’ (water) in blue. The scroll that comes out is blue with yellow on its edges.

  • Wind Release

The Wind Release Scrolls are launched by bending the index, middle, and ring fingers. The symbol that appears is the kanji ‘kaze’ (wind) in green. The scroll is green with red on its edges.

  • Lightning Release

The Lightning Release Scrolls are launched by bending the middle finger, ring finger, and the thumb. The symbol on Kote has never been seen, but it’s safe to assume to be the kanji ‘kaminari’ (lightning) in yellow. The scroll is yellow with black on its edges.

  • Earth Release

The Earth Release Scrolls are launched by bending the pinky and ring fingers. The symbol has also never been seen, it’s assumed to be the kanji ‘tsuchi’ (earth) in brown. The scroll being launch has also never been seen.

  • Hiden

The Hiden Scrolls are launched by bending all the fingers, with the index and middle fingers being higher than the others. The symbol is the kanji ‘kage’ (shadow) in purple -- but there’s a big possibility it only applies only to the use of Kagemane no Jutsu, as it could be different depending on certain techniques of hiden. The scroll being shot out is purple with yellow on its edges.

  • Kage Bunshin

The Kage Bunshin Scrolls are launched by bending the pinky finger, ring finger, and the thumb. There’s no symbol will show up on the Kote. The scroll being shot out is similar to hiden in color, so it’s possible that the color purple and this hand seal are used to perform common jutsus.

Well, that’s a brief explanation regarding how Kote works in Boruto! If you want to know about the jutsus that have been performed with Kote, you may continue reading by visiting the link below. Hopefully, you find this discussion on the jutsu in Naruto useful and entertaining!
