The Salesman became one of the mysterious characters in the drama Squid Game (2021). His appearance in the first season was brief, appearing only in episodes 1 and 9. In Squid Game 2 (2024), the background of The Salesman and the reason he became a recruiter in the Squid Game are finally revealed. So, who is The Salesman really?
In Squid Game (2021), The Salesman briefly appears, tasked with recruiting participants, including Seong Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae). He always appears in neatly tailored suits and a polished look.
The Salesman carries a black briefcase containing money and ddakji, a traditional Korean game featuring red and blue paper tiles. He speaks in a distinctive tone, always calm and smiling. However, in the second season, The Salesman’s true nature, almost psychopathic, is revealed.

Initially, he served as a Pink Guard with a circle-shaped mask, symbolizing workers who carried and burned the bodies of eliminated players.
Later, The Salesman was promoted to a Pink Guard with a triangle-shaped mask, tasked with shooting eliminated players. The Salesman also reveals that his father was once a Squid Game player, and he was forced to shoot his father when he was eliminated.
The Salesman is portrayed by actor Gong Yoo, who recently made a return in the drama The Trunk (2024) alongside Seo Hyun Jin. Gong Yoo’s acting, portraying both Noh In Ji and The Salesman, is vastly different, in terms of visuals, gestures, and speech.
