A lot of online games or mobile games got an in-game shop feature. This feature allows a gamer to shop all kinds of items, from a booster, equipment, and many more. To get those items, gamers will have to pay using in-game currency and/or real money. Gamers who spend their real money on games are called ‘Whale’. This gamer willingly spends their money to help their character progress faster than other players. 

The existence of whales indirectly ‘threaten’ free-to-play gamers. Especially when the game is designed to be P2W (pay-to-win). Obviously, this gives the whales an advantage. But that doesn’t mean free-to-play gamers are helpless.

A lot of F2P players still play P2W games willingly. Then why do F2P players willingly play P2W games? Today the writer will tell you the reasons why.

1. As a Proving Ground

Most gamers spend hours playing P2W games. With more hours that they can spend on gaming on their bag, they can beat players who spent their money on their character. Their experience becomes a valuable asset to look for shortcuts so they can become the greatest. Imagine, the character that you played F2P beating P2W characters.

2. Enjoys the Game

Enjoyable and contentment are the reasons why gamers play P2W games. Starting out as trying the game, now you spend weeks learning the in and out of the game. When this happens, there’s no way you are willing to shelf your character just to collect dust. Especially when you spend your time and work hard to improve your character. Another reason why F2P players stick with the game is the gameplay and community. When all criteria are fulfilled, then why bother looking for a new game?

3. Want to Look Like a Whale

This is similar to the first point, but now you want to be in their position. Some F2P gamers play P2W games just to look cool. Imagine, when your friends are playing free games, you are the only one playing P2W games. You are automatically considered a whale by your friend.

4. Invited by a Friend

Who here ended up playing P2W games because your friends asked you to play with them? This usually happens when a gamer wants to stick with their community or group of friends. Resulting in this gamer to be following the trend and play whatever games their friend is playing.

5. Nostalgia

Nostalgia is the final reason why gamers choose the P2W path rather than playing the game normally. This usually happens on popular games from the past and re-released. This triggers a lot of veteran players to return and their ‘noob’ character won’t allow them to experience what they tasted in the original game.

After years, their ‘noob’ character can return to their former glory. So these gamers willingly spend their money on the things they passed before. So it’s not surprising to see gamers spend their time doing weird things on their game.
