Fate/Apocrypha is a spin-off of the popular Fate franchise, but different from the main series like Fate/Stay Night. This anime is set in a parallel world where the Holy Grail was stolen from Fuyuki and taken to Europe by the Yggdmillennia family. The story centers on an unusual Holy Grail War, which is between two large factions, the Black faction consisting of members of the Yggdmillennia family and the Red faction consisting of magi sent by the Association of Magi from the clock tower.
The battle format used is quite unique and different from the previous series. Each faction has seven Servants with classic classes such as Saber, Lancer, and Archer and others. In total, there are 14 Servants fighting, not including the Ruler, Jeanne dArc, who acts as a mediator in this war. The many characters presented make Fate Apocrypha interesting, but also risk confusing for new viewers.
In terms of story, Fate Apocrypha presents a narrative full of action and drama. The conflict between factions is presented intensely, although some subplots feel underdeveloped due to time constraints. One of the main strengths of this anime is the relationship between the main character Sieg the homunculus and Jeanne dArc. The story of Sieg's struggle to understand the meaning of freedom and humanity provides emotional depth amidst the brutal war.
The visuals from A-1 Pictures are solid, with dynamic battle animations and stunning magic effects. Some scenes, such as the fight between Mordred and Shishigou against Semiramis and Shirou Kotomine, stand out for their slick choreography and magnificent cinematography.
The soundtrack is well done by Masaru Yokoyama, giving an epic feel that matches the scale of the story. The opening and ending songs are also quite memorable, supporting the overall atmosphere of the anime.
However, the anime is not without its flaws. The characterization of some Servants feels shallow and the story development is sometimes rushed. Viewers who are not familiar with the Fate world may have difficulty understanding the context and magic system used.
Overall, Fate Apocrypha is a great watch for fans of fantasy action and Fate series fans who want to see a variation on the Holy Grail War. Despite its flaws, the epic battles, strong character designs, and themes of humanity make it worth watching.
