Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is released at the same time as Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. The game is the first shooter game ever released for both next-gen consoles and also PC. Unlike other Call of Duty black Ops games, Cold War brings something new to the table, from the plot, graphics, and gameplay.

This FPS game is developed by Tryarch and Raven Software and published under Activision. Making Cold War the sixth game in the Black Ops series and the 17th game from the Call of Duty franchise.

Inspired by Historical Event

As the title suggests, CoD: Black Ops Cold War is set during the Cold War between the US and Uni Soviet in the 1980s. You will enter the era when Ronald Reagan was the President of the United States of America. Ronald Reagan was famous for his foreign policy for winning the Cold War and knockback communism.

This is crucial because it helps the US become the superpower country. However, Uni Soviet refused to back down just like that, they ordered spies to take down the US with any means necessary.

The Campaign Mode in CoD: Black Ops Cold War follows the mission of a CIA agent, Russell Adler that hunts a Soviet Spy, Perseus. His goal is to topple America and tip the balance in favor of the Uni Soviet.

Adler was ordered by Reagan and formed an elite team including “Bell” (player) to help Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Jason Hudson. The team will try to locate Perseus and abort his mission. But things are not as easy because you are faced with a difficult and confusing situation.

Mode Campaign yang Seru 

As a whole the Campaign Mode in CoD: Black Ops Cold War is not too massive nor too small. There are 16 missions in this mode. Every mission is unique. Before the mission start, you will enter a Safe House to chat and get more information from other characters.

On the mission board, you can see the missions available to you, evidence, and the target. Interestingly, some missions also contain a mystery that you can solve. Solving the mystery will benefit you and make the mission easier to be completed. Solving the mystery is not easy since you have to find hidden evidence in the battlefield. So make sure to pay attention to your surrounding.

Unlike Modern Warfare, in Cold War you can create your own character, you can even choose a gender and a psychological profile that you can choose as you wish. This psychological profile affects the personality and character you play.

The Campaign Mode is not always about shooting. There are situations where you need to use your brain and face something unexpected. Treyarch and Raven Software also insert some content such as classic arcade games from the 80s from Activision.

Multiplayer Mode 

The most anticipated thing by CoD fans from Cold War is the multiplayer mode. Yes, the multiplayer mode in CoD: Black Ops Cold War is different from Modern Warfare. The multiplayer mode in Cold War is similar to Warzone but in a smaller environment.

In the multiplayer mode, you will find several menus in the Lobby such as Loadout, Operators, Challenges, Barrack, and Store. In this menu, you can configure and change the weapons that you will use. You can also select an operator and buy more weapons and operators from the Store.  

Another takeout from the multiplayer mode is that you can select the class that you are going to play. By selecting a class, you can raise your weapon levels and unlock more attachments to be used.

The Multiplayer mode got several game modes that you can play such as Feature, consisting of Fireteam: Dirty Bomb, Combine Arms Moshpit, and VIP Escort. You also have Team Deathmatch, Hardpoint, Domination, Kill Confirmed, Control, Free For All, and Search and Destroy. If you feel that those modes are enough challenging enough, you can select the Hardcore mode where you can play against the best players.

Zombie Mode

And last, the Zombie mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War also brings new elements that allow the players to carry their loadout before battling the zombies. Like the Multiplayer Lobby, you can also set your weapon, operator, and many more. There are two modes that you can select, Public or Private. The Public mode got three missions that you can play with up to three players. In the Private mode, you can fight the zombies by yourself. There’s Featured Challenge mission, a this is a time-limited mission where you can get a weapon.

The Zombie mode in Cold War is more intense. If you love killing zombies, then is mode is worth playing. Not to mention there are several modes and Challenges that you can complete.

Verdict

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War brings something new to the table, the storyline continues the anticipated Black Ops series. The game is about Cold War, a historic event never made into a game before. Treyarch and Raven Software successfully packed the Campaign mode really well and made it one of its best features. However, some CoD fanboys are disappointed by the plot presented in the game since it’s less intense than other Black Ops games.

The Multiplayer and Zombie mode is another key point in the game where players will spend hours playing the game. The Multiplayer mode in Cold War is different from CoD Warzone. Especially the Zombie mode that feels intense.

Overall, there are many aspects that you can try in CoD: Black Ops Cold War, completing the Campaign mode is not equal to solving all the mysteries and finding the hidden evidence. So you may jump back into the game to solve it.

Since the writer played CoD: Black Ops Cold War on PS4 Slim, the graphic quality is just good enough. You can play the game on PS5 using its backward compatibility. But it won’t have the features presented in next-gen consoles such as higher framerate, ray-tracing, faster loading time, and many more. Unless you are planning on getting the cross-gen bundle.

At Rp879.000 (Digital) on PlayStation Store, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a game worth buying. The graphic is awesome, the gameplay is fresher, and the multiplayer and zombie mode is exciting, making the game worth playing.
