After being leaked on May 7, 2021, fans of the action-adventure game and the 'Yakuza' game series can now enjoy the most awaited sequel of the year: Lost Judgment (or Lost Judgment: Unjudged Memories in Japan).

This game is produced by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, a studio under SEGA. For the first time in history, the game is releasing globally on September 24, 2021, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. For those who are curious about this game, you can watch the trailer below to know some details about the game.

For your information, Dunia Games played this game on PlayStation 4. Without further ado, take a look at the review below.

The Student Bullying in Yokohama

Lost Judgment is a sequel to Judgment which was released in 2018. Set in December 2021, a lawyer turned private detective Takayuki Yagami (Takuya Kimura) gets a call from the Genda law office. They inform him that they are currently working on a murder case located in Ijincho, Yokohama. Yagami, who happened to be in Ijincho, is asked to visit and investigate the crime scene to investigate the murder case. After further investigation, it is revealed out that the perpetrator of the murder is Akihiro Ehara (Ken Mitsuishi), a former police officer who was fired for being a suspect in sexual harassment.

After a deeper investigation, Yagami finds out that Ehara's murder case is not the first time to happen in Ijincho, and apparently, similar murder cases also occur in Kamurocho as well. Could Yagami uncover the truth behind these cases? Do each case related to the other? Find out the answer by playing the game!

Fight with Three Different Styles

Lost Judgment presents a beat 'em up action system similar to the Yakuza games back in the Kazuma Kiryu era. In this game, Yagami is packed with three fighting styles, in which two fighting styles have been introduced in Judgment: 'Crane' (marked with a blue aura) and 'Tiger' (marked with a red aura). The third and the newest fighting style is 'Snake' (marked with a green aura) which focuses on disarming the opponent's weapon and defeating the opponent with joint lock attacks.

In addition to a new fighting style, Yagami is also added with an equipment system to protect himself from enemy attacks. On top of that, Ex-Action is also making a comeback with a myriad of new, more deadly moves to subdue your opponents.

Besides bringing back the beat'em up gameplay, Lost Judgment also gets a major upgrade to its stealth gameplay. If you remember, the stealth system in Judgment is only limited to disguise and tailing people. In this game, Yagami can parkour to sneak into crime scenes, distract guards, and use several different gadgets to find hidden clues. Yagami's ability as a detective in uncovering the truth will be more tested here.

Explore Tokyo and Yokohama

Lost Judgment sets in two different cities, Kamurocho (a city based on Kabukicho in Shinjuku, Tokyo) and Isezaki Ijincho (a city based on Isezakicho in Yokohama). Previously, Isezaki Ijincho served the main setting in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. If you notice, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio often uses the same assets for their games, and this game is no exception.

The Yokohama presented in Lost Judgment is similar to the one in Like a Dragon, with the addition of Seiryo High School, which is the main setting of the story. Then, to speed up your pace from one place to another, Yagami can use a skateboard as a means of transportation other than taxis.

The Cast

Maintaining the old tradition, Lost Judgment still has famous Japanese actors and actresses to star in this game. This time, Lost Judgment starring:

  • Takuya Kimura (Hero, Masquerade Night) returns to reprise his role as the main character Takayuki Yagami from the previous game;
  • Akira Nakao (Tonde Saitama, Ninkyō Gakuen) returns to reprise his role as Ryuzo Genda from the previous game;
  • Hiroshi Tamaki (The Way of the Househusband, Nodame Cantabile) as Kazuki Soma;
  • Koji Yamamoto (Kamen Rider Zero-One, Sanada Maru) as Jin Kuwana;
  • Ken Mitsuishi (The Supporting Actors 3, Yell) as Akihiro Ehara.

In addition to the famous names above, the voice actors from the previous game also make a return, plus several new voice actors whose names are already familiar, such as Shinshu Fuji (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) as Masaharu Kaito, Risa Shimizu (Attack on Titan) as Mafuyu. Fuji, Yuko Kaida (Sword Art Online: Alicization) as Saori Shirosaki, Junta Terashima (Boruto: The Next Generations) as Fumiya Sugiura, and Mai Yamane (My Hero Academia) as Yoko Sawa.

In addition, the famous Japanese rock singer, Ado, contributes her song entitled 'Rasen' as the opening song of this game. You can listen to this song on YouTube and Spotify.

Return to School by Joining School Clubs

One of the interesting things introduced in Lost Judgment and not found in previous games and other Yakuza titles is the school plot. To unravel the mystery of Ehara's murder, Yagami must investigate Seiryo High School to find traces and evidence left behind. The inclusion of school feels incomplete if it is not spiced up with the relationship between students and their activities outside the school.

For the investigation to run smoothly, Yagami proposes himself to be an advisor in the Seiryo High School Mystery Club, so that Yagami can freely roam the school without fear of getting caught. Besides being an advisor, Yagami is asked by the club president to join other clubs at the school, such as the modern dance club, boxing, robotics, esports, and others.

Verdict

Lost Judgment is not just a sequel and upgrade to Judgment, but can also be considered a “stepping stone” for the franchise as a whole. One of the achievements of this game is the simultaneous worldwide release date, which is rumored to be the standard for the games that follow.

Before you play Lost Judgment, it's better if you play (or beat) Judgment first because these two games are still connected.

In addition, Lost Judgment is rumored to have a Season Pass which is currently in development. For a leak of the content that will be introduced in the Season Pass, you can see it in the image below.

So that's Dunia Games' take on Lost Judgment. In your opinion, is Lost Judgment worth playing or skip? We recommend you to play because this game still presents detective and legal-thriller stories that can surprise you at the end of each chapter. In the end, if you decide to buy and play this game, enjoy!
