LittleBigPlanet 3 was a platformer game released on PlayStation 4 in November 2014. Repeating the process, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is the first platformer game released on PlayStation 5. The existence of this game helped PS5 users that are looking for a family-friendly game that kids can play besides Astro’s Playroom.

Unlike LittleBigPlanet 3, Sackboy: A Big Adventure presents fresh content yet retain the same elements. The game focuses on the character Sackboy and his adventure in the bigger world. So players won’t be easily bored while playing the game.

Excitingly, the game isn’t exclusive to PlayStation 5 since it’s released to PlayStation 4 too. So PS4 users can enjoy the exciting adventure of Sackboy. But don’t worry, there’s a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5 for Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The only exception to the free upgrade offer is if you purchase a physical PS4 edition of the game and the PS5 Digital Edition.

Thanks to Sony Interactive Entertainment, the writer will make a review of Sackboy: A Big Adventure. After playing the game for a couple of days, this is what the writer has to say about the game.

Straightforward Plot

Like LittleBigPlanet, Sackboy: A Big Adventure presents a straightforward plot and easy to digest, even for kids. The back story is like every Disney movie. Where you will see a planet named Craftworld and a villain named Vex. Vex wants to turn Craftworld into hell. To do that, Vex kidnaps every individual in Craftworld and leaving Sackboy alone.

Still, Sackboy refused to stay still, he then goes to a rocket and ran away from Vex, and starts planning to save his friends. With the help of a new character named Scarlet, Sackboy starts his challenging journey in Craftworld to beat Vex.

Can Sackboy save his friends? Find the answer by playing Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

A Gameplay that is more Fun

Veteran LittleBigPlanet players will notice the changes in Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The gameplay of this game is similar to Astro’s Playroom with the difference being its camera perspective. In this game, you are playing as Sackboy and your goal is to reach the checkpoint to get to the next level. To make the adventure more exciting, Sackboy can do many things such as running, jumping, punching, headbutting, and use gadgets to complete his adventure.

As a platformer game, Sackboy: A Big Adventure comes with exciting challenges and problems to make the game less monotone. Every obstacle in the game is quite easy to pass, even for kids. Besides collecting points and bells, you also have to find water bubbles that are located somewhere hard to reach and well hidden. The bubbles will help you reach the highest score at the level you are playing. So make sure to collect the water bubble before getting to the checkpoint.

The bells you are collecting are the in-game currency that you can use to buy costumes to make Sackboy look cooler. But not every costume can be bought with the bell, because some costumes can be unlocked by collecting pieces of the costume hidden in every stage.

One of the reaming features from the old game is the “Grab” feature. This feature allows you to dangle from an object and now upgraded so you can pull, push, and thor objects. Which improves the gameplay even more.

The boss battle in Sackboy: A Big Adventure seems to be more diverse, especially when you are facing Vex. Vex appears will different challenges making him the most annoying boss in the game.

Multiplayer Mode

After completing every single-player mission in Sackboy: A Big Adventure, you can continue to the multiplayer mode. Yes, this game has a fun multiplayer mode! In the multiplayer mode, you can play with three friends. The adventure becomes better as you are playing with your friends. By playing the multiplayer mode, you can also access special stages that don’t exist in the single-player mode.

But currently, players can only play it offline, the online multiplayer mode will be added several days after the release. The multiplayer mode is very exciting because you can play with your friends, family, or kids.

Eye-pleasing Graphic

The player played Sackboy: A Big Adventure on PlayStation 4 Slim on a monitor that supports HDR. Despite the max resolution in PS4 Slim is only Full HD 1080p, but the writer feels like the graphic being shown is good enough. Especially with the HDR being turned on, the brightness feels really optimized and pleases the eyes.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is developed by Sumo Digital using Unreal Engine. The most enjoyable thing about the game is the colorful visual and game area that is very intuitive. Although it’s not an open-world game, the in-game world is not boring because you will find something new every time you complete a stage.

As a platformer game, the biggest challenge is the frame-drops when playing. This is crucial since you don’t want your hard battle against a boss to get interrupted by frame-drops. The writer didn’t experience any frame-drop when playing Sackboy: A Big Adventure on PS4 Slim, everything runs well during the whole gameplay.

Lighting, shadow, and reflection are the most prominent aspect in this game, but since the writer is playing it on a PS4 Slim, it’s not as prominent. You can enjoy those aspects more if you are playing on PS5 thanks to the ray-tracing. Not to mention some of the obstacles and puzzles support the Haptic Feedback on the DualSense controller.

Diverse Tunes

Things will get boring if you are playing a platformer game and it’s only playing the same tune. But it’s not the case with Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Every level in the game got different tunes, so besides the visual that pleases the eyes, you can also spoil your ears.

Verdict

This is a special month for Sony. After the release of PlayStation 5, there are many games that are coming to the console, one of them is Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Although the game is not as popular as Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the game by Sumo Digital has a special place in the heart of veteran LittleBigPlanet players. Especially for gamers with kids.

The writer hasn’t completed the game despite already playing it for several days. As hinted in the title of the game, it got many contents to be explored. Not to mention the game has an offline multiplayer mode so it can be played with family and friends during the weekend.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a game worth buying. Especially if you are planning to get a PS5 next year since you can upgrade it for free so there’s no need to buy another copy of the game to be played in the next-gen console.

With a long play hour,  top-notch visual and audio, and challenging gameplay, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is worth getting at Rp879.000 (Digital) if you are looking for an exciting platformer game.
