[REVIEW] Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Becoming a Different Spider-Man
Insomniac Games finally released Spider-Man: Miles Morales for PS4 and PS5. see the review here!
Game Review | 10 November
The success of Spider-Man on PlayStation 4 laves Insomniac Games wanting for more. In just two years, the developer from Burbank, California develops the Spider-Man franchise to be even bigger with Spider-Man Miles Morales.
Since it first appeared, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is rumored to be a downloadable content (DLC) for Spider-Man. But Insomniac Games denied that because Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a standalone expansion. To be a DLC the file size of Spider-Man: Miles Morales is too big yet it is too small to be a standalone game.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy from Naughty Dog. where the world and the gameplay mechanism is similar, but with different character and plot to give a different playing experience.
Fortunately, Sony Interactive Entertainment allows the writer to review Spider-Man: Miles Morales. FYI, the writer tried the game on PS4 Slim using an HDR monitor. After playing the game for several days, this is what the writer has to say about the game.
Condensed Storyline
In Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018), Miles Morales is a teenager that is close to Peter Parker. But because of an accident, Miles was bitten by a mutated spider. Miles then got a superpower like Peter but some of his powers are still unknown.
Knowing this, Peter guides miles to understand his power better, and prepares him to be the next Spider-Man to help New York City. on an occasion, Peter is busy helping his girlfriend Mar Jane. So he entrusted the responsibility to protect New York City with Miles Morales.
Unlike Peter, Miles as Spider-Man is relatively unknown, especially by the resident. Miles has to build his reputation from the ground up, starting from the block where he lives in Harlem. Additionally, Miles’s mother, Rio Morales is campaigning for City Council.
Something is always up in New York. In Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a war breaks out between two sides, Roxxon energy Corporation and a high tech crime group called Underground lead by Tinkerer.
With his heroic instinct, Miles Morales will automatically side with Roxxon. But there’s a trigger that caused Underground to attack Roxxon. Many oddities made Miles got involved directly to investigate. The result of the investigation is shocking and he is dragged into the complicated problem and tried to solve it on his own.
Can Miles solve the problem? You can find the answer by playing Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Exciting Gameplay
Marvel's Spider-Man (2018) has a great formula. So Insomniac doesn’t change too much of the gameplay. But you can tell the new things implemented in the game to make it more exciting.
Miles Morales houses a different power from Peter Parker, so their fighting style will be different. Besides his strength, Miles also got Venom Power and Camouflage.
These two superpowers affect the playstyle in the game. So you can play it full frontal with Venom Power or stealthily with Camouflage.
Camouflage is a great ability since the boss character can’t detect Miles. But you have to remain careful since the opponent can adapt to detect Miles’s presence.
In general, the gameplay of Spider-Man: Miles Morales is similar to Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018), so veteran players can easily adapt to the game. New players don’t have to worry about getting into the game since the game got a number of tutorials to help you learn the ropes.
Vast Exploration
As an open-world game, you are faced with the massive New York map and everything unique in the city. Besides running the main mission, you can also work on side missions spread all over the city. Not just on the minimap, the side mission may appear suddenly when you are nearby.
The side missions act not only as a side activity, it also grant various rewards, such as Experience, Token, and Collectible Item. Although the name is changed, the concept remains the same as Spider-Man (2018), with Combat Challenge, Stealth Challenge, Traversal Challenge, helping the police, and many more.

Excitingly, every side mission is made to be practical with a smart app called Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (FNSM) made by Ganke, Miles’s friend. You can open the app by swiping the Touchpad of your DualShock 4 to the left and you will see the missions that you can do. Besides using the smart app, you can see the missions on the map.
Awesome Graphics
Compared to Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), the graphics in Spider-Man: Miles Morales is much better. The details shown in the PS4 Slim that the writer is using is awesome. With the HDR turned on, the visual in New York seems to be more lively.
The most striking thing in Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the lighting and attack effect. The visual really pleases your eye compared to Marvel's Spider-Man (2018). Unfortunately, since it’s just a PS4 Slim, the graphic is capped at 1080p so it’s not optimal.
The graphics may be better if you are playing the game on PS4 Pro or PlayStation 5 when the console is launched. Insomniac Games confirmed that Spider-Man: Miles Morales supports ray-tracing, so the graphics will be more realistic, especially in the lighting, reflection, and shadow sector.
Exciting Audio
Jumping and swinging from building to building is one of the things that you will do in the game. But Insomniac Games made the activity less boring. Because when you are about to jump and swing to a specific location, you are presented with sweet beats.
The audio experience in the game seems lively. Thanks to the arrangement by John Paesano and the team, listening to the audio in the game made you feel like watching a movie.
Photo Mode Feature
The photo mode feature is a must in a triple-A game. You can use your creativity to snap a photo in the game like a real photographer. You can adjust many things in the photo mode to give the desired effect.
Verdict
To be fair, the writer completed Spider-Man: Miles Morales in one day. Yup, you can complete the game within hours. Like Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), the story presented is quite short for an expansion game.
Unlike Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), the game focuses solely on Mile Morales. So you won’t change into other characters like in the previous game. Resulting in the player becoming obsessed to complete the main story quest.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a standalone expansion like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The gameplay, background setting, and other elements remain the same. The only difference is the plot and character. Still, Spider-Man: Miles Moralesoffers something different.
So, is Spider-Man: Miles Morales worth playing? Yes, because the thing being offered here is not just the new storyline. The updates made the game cooler and more pleasing to your eyes.
The gameplay is more fun, the visual and audio is better, wider exploration, and the story is just as exciting. Everything can be enjoyed by paying Rp729.000 (Digital), the writer feel like Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a game worth playing if you are a huge Marvel fan.
