Supermassive Games, the developer famous for the horror game Until Dawn, has released a new game. This game is The Quarry. Carrying the same genre, can The Quarry's quality match Until Dawn?

Incidentally, the author had the opportunity to try The Quarry through a review copy provided by publisher 2K. Initially, the author thought that The Quarry was a sequel or at least had something to do with Until Dawn. But it turned out to be wrong. The Quarry is a different game from Until Dawn, in terms of story.

Teen Horror Storyline Combined with Movie-esque Graphics

The theme raised by The Quarry is the same as Until Dawn, which is about teen horror. Elements of horror are woven into the story about teenagers and their problems. For teenage gamers, perhaps the theme raised by The Quarry will be relatable. However, for mature gamers such as the writer, this can be a hit or a miss.

Spoiler, The Quarry tells of nine teenagers trapped in Hackett's Quarry summer camp. Apparently, the camp has a dark secret about the curse of werewolves or werewolves involving the camp owner, the Hackett family.

The nine teenagers are Laura Kearney, Max Brinly, Abigail Blyg, Dylan Lenivy, Emma Mountebank, Jacob Custos, Kaitilyn Ka, Nicholas Furcillo, and Ryan Erzahler. They all have the stereotype of teenagers in Hollywood movies. For example, Jacob and Emma are a couple who just broke up because of love. Then there is Dylan who is always cool and often mocks others. Emma secretly likes Nicholas but doesn't dare say it.

The teenagers in the game The Quarry are played by famous young actors and actresses. An example is actor Justice Smith who plays Ryan. He has appeared as Tim Goodman, the main character in the Pokemon Detective Pikachu film along with Ryan Reynolds.

Not just young talents. The Quarry also presents senior celebrities such as Ted Raimi who plays Travis, a police officer with a super creepy face. Then there is Lance Henriksen, who often appears in Aliens films as Jedediah, as the head of the Hackett family.

So in terms of acting, all the actors have performed optimally. Combined with a slick graphic display, you will be presented with a realistic character display. The facial expressions of the characters in the game can show what they are feeling. When in happy or sad moments, they are able to show their emotions. When being chased by werewolves, they can also show fear.

For the author, there are several moments where this teen drama has been successfully understood by the author. However, there are also other moments that the writer thinks are cringe. Maybe this is because the author is an adult. If the players were teenagers, maybe the reception would be different.

This teen drama is quite long presented in The Quarry. Honestly, the author thinks that this section is a bit boring. The Quarry only started to get interesting when it entered the second half. In this section, werewolves began to appear and kill some of the main characters.

Gameplay Where Players Spends More Time Watching

The Quarry is an interactive drama horror game. If you play a game like this, don't expect it to be like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. Throughout the game your job is just to watch like a movie.

No need to worry about forgetting to play the game. The Quarry also has a QTE (Quick Time Event) system where you are required to press a button. For example, when the character is running from the werewolves and suddenly there is a door in front of him. You have to press the specified button at the right time for the character to open the door.

You will also be asked to be the decision-maker for the character used. The choice of this decision will have an impact on the storyline. It could be that the character will die because you made the wrong decision. It can also make other characters become victims. So make sure to always listen to the dialogue so as not to make the wrong decision.

Just as an addition, The Quarry also has a multiplayer mode. You can play with friends online or local co-op. So the mechanic of this multiplayer mode is that each player will move one character. So every decision made will depend on the player who plays it. 

Has Multiple Endings, Plus Points For Replay Value

There are many endings that can be found in The Quarry. Every decision made will result in a different ending. Spoiler, The Quarry has at least 186 endings. You can determine the fate of the nine main characters. Will they die or stay alive? Uniquely, this game will give you clues about the fate of the characters.

These clues come through visions performed by a character named The Hag. This character always appears at the end of each chapter and will provide clues to players through tarot cards. This card can be found while playing. But the location is hidden. Through tarot cards you can find out the fate that awaits the characters in the game. So that when playing later the bad luck that awaits can be avoided. This guide itself is very limited. It's up to you to interpret it.

Technical Issues Experienced

The author plays The Quarry on PC. The PC specifications that I use are i5-9400F, GeForce RTX 2060, and 16GB RAM. With these specifications, the author can play The Quarry with medium or high specifications. But there are technical issues that writers often experience and this can be quite annoying.

The first issue is audio sync or lag where visuals and sound are not in sync as they should be. This condition usually occurs after loading when suddenly the visual stops completely (dark screen) while the audio continues to run. This technical problem is not only experienced by the author, but also by other gamers who play The Quarry on PC (Steam). It is suspected that the cause is the launcher.

If you play it on a PC (Steam), you are required to activate two launchers. First the Steam launcher itself then you will be transferred to 2K's launcher. Only after the 2K launcher is running, you can only play the game.

Another thing that the author needs to say about technical problems is the problem of visual appearance when the characters in the game are looking. Sometimes their neck movements can look 'abnormal'.

Verdict

The Quarry is a game for gamers who prefer to watch the story rather than play the game itself. There are many game genres like this now. But games made by Supermassive Games are arguably better than others. The reason is the row of actors and actresses involved. This is also a plus of The Quarry.
