Sanji is a man who loves women. Throughout the story, we often see Sanji calling Nami with the honorific “-san” and also Robin with the honorific “-chan”. Even though Robin is older than Nami, Sanji should have called Robin “-san” too, right? Have you ever wondered why? Here's the answer!
In the SBS One Piece column volume 80, one of the readers asked this question. Oda answered why Sanji called Nami with “san” as in “Nami-san” and Robin with “-chan” as in “Robin-chan”. According to Oda, Sanji understands the feelings of women who wanted to be treated as young girls every time they get older, while young ones wanted to be treated as adult ones.
In Japan, the honorific “-san” is often added when addressing an older person, whereas “-chan” is more often used to refer to younger people. Added with the answer above, that is why Sanji class Nami with “Nami-san” and Robin with “Robin-chan” and not the other way around.
