Marco ate the mythical Zoan Devil Fruit which allows him to turn into his phoenix form, giving him an exceptional regeneration ability with blue flames. On the other hand, Ace ate the Mera Mera no Mi, bestowing him the ability to produce and manipulates fire. What distinguishes Marco’s blue flame with Ace’s flame?

In an SBS column, a fan asked this question. Here’s the exchange between Oda and the fan:

F: “Hi, Oda-sensei. I think I don’t really understand how Marco’s type of Devil Fruit differs from Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi.”

O: “Okay, I’ll explain a bit about Marco’s ability. Marco is a user of the Zoan Devil Fruit’s ability. But since he got the power of the Blue Flame of Resurrection, which is a phoenix-like ability that provides him regeneration power, he won’t get hurt from normal attacks, however, there are limitations in using this regeneration ability.

In other words, Marco’s blue flame only grants him regeneration. The blu flame doesn’t have the original function of a normal flame, it doesn’t burn or spread, or grow, nor does it heat. Simply put, Marco blue flame is totally different from Ace’s produced from Mera Mera no Mi.

The ability of this blue flame is also known as the Blue Flame of Resurrection, and Flame of Restoration. Marco’s regeneration ability can also be used to heal other creatures besides himself. With that, Marco can also play a role as a medic.

In Whitebeard home island, we can see Marco taking care of the inhabitants with his blue flame. He takes a role as a doctor and vows to protect the island from other pirates. This is why Marco turned down Nekomamushi’s invitation to help him fight Kaido in Wano.
