On Sunday, January 14th 2024, the Broadcast Film Critics Association announced the winners of the 29th Annual Critics' Choice Awards. The anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off by Science SARU and Abel Gongora won the award for Best Animated Series - Non-Televised. In tough competition, this series managed to outperform tough competitors such as Bluey, Bob's Burgers, Harley Quinn, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Young Love.
Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron Saga is nominated in the Best Animated Feature category, while Godzilla Minus One is nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. Unfortunately, neither of them managed to take home awards in their respective categories, because Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse came out as the winner of Best Animated Feature, while Anatomy of a Fall won the title of Best Foreign Language Film.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is adapted from the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley, which has captured the attention of critics and fans. This series premiered on Netflix on November 17th 2023, bringing back the cast from the 2010 live action movie adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the World such as Chris Evans and Brie Larson to voice the characters in this anime version.
The project is written by O'Malley, who also serves as executive producer alongside Grabinski (new series "Are You Afraid of the Dark?"). Both also serve as showrunners. The famous Japanese animation studio, Science SARU (which was previously famous for works such as DEVILMAN crybaby, The Heike Story, and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!), took over the animation of this project.
Science SARU CEO Eunyoung Choi assumes the role of producer, while Abel Gongora (who was also involved in "Star Wars: Visions" with the episode "TO-B1") is directing.
Edgar Wright, director and co-writer of the 2010 live action movie adaptation of Scott Pilgrim, served as executive producer of the anime along with his producing partner, Nira Park, movie co-writer Michael Bacall, and the producer team from Marc Platt Productions, =Marc Platt, Jared Leboff, and Adam Seigel. The success of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off proves that the appeal of the Scott Pilgrim story is still strong, even in animated format.
