In Attack on Titan, there are 9 special Titans, aptly called the Titan Shifters. These Titan Shifters are humans who possess the Titan powers that allow them to turn into Titans. Unlike other common Titans, they can retain some of their physical features and maintain their common sense.

Some people who have read the Attack on Titan manga may have been wondering about the origins of the 9 Titan Shifters. So, without further ado, let’s jump into it!

The History of the Nine Titans

Around 2,000 years ago, Ymir Fritz gained the power of the Titans and became the first Titan, the Founding Titan. 13 years later, she died and her power split into her three daughters who were forced to eat her corpse. The power of the Titan eventually passed down to 9 of her descendants, into what we call the Nine Titans.

The Nine Titans later destroyed the ancient nation of Marley and conquered the continent to establish the Eldian Empire. Since family relation plays a significant role in preserving the Titan power, the Nine Titans usually resided within noble families during Eldia’s reign -- exemplified by the Fritz family with the Founding Titan and the Tybur family with the War Hammer Titan.

The noble families who held the Nine Titans, except for the Fritz, were constantly in conflict with each other, but the Founding Titan was able to maintain peace. When the 145th King, Karl Fritz, inherited the Founding Titan, he was deeply ashamed for how his people had been treating the Marleyans.

He then conspired with the Tybur family, to redeem the actions of their ancestors by contriving a fake story of Helos, a Marleyan hero who defeated King Fritz. They managed to incite a civil war -- the Great Titan War.

During the war, Marley managed to seize control over seven of the Nine Titans, with only the Founding and Attack Titans were able to escape. The Marleyans also inherited the Titan powers they had, with the War Hammer Titan being the only exception, to the loyal Eldians known as Warriors.

Karl Fritz then moved the Eldians to Paradis Island and built the Walls by creating thousands of Colossal Titans, which hardened to form three concentric walls. After that, King Fritz erased the memories of the Eldians on the island, except for a few races who were immune.

Meanwhile, the Tybur family was allowed to held the War Hammer Titan as they were the first to fight for Marley. So, they and the Reiss family were the only remaining Eldian houses left with their Titan after the war.

The Reiss family later lost their Founding Titan to Grisha Yeager in 845. After Grisha ate Frieda Reiss’ Founding Titan, the two Titans mixed into one, thus the number of Titans was reduced to eight. The number was reduced once again years later when Eren Yeager’s Attack Titan ate the War Hammer Titan.
