Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Legend Ten Rings is the first Marvel movie to use Chinese actors, themes, and culture. The action scenes are quite exciting—reminiscent of old Wuxia movies as well as Jackie Chan's Hong Kong action movies. All of this is combined with a unique, interesting, and beautiful setting.

Shang-Chi is also one of the Marvel movies full of fantasy creatures. The creatures that appear come from Chinese mythology. What are these fantasy creatures? Here are all the mythological creatures that appeared in the Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Ring movie!

1. Dijiang

The first fantasy creature to appear in a movie. Shang-Chi encounters a creature named Morris when he encounters Trevor Slattery in a dungeon. Morris himself is a creature originating from Chinese mythology named DiJiang, or sometimes also called the sacred creature DiJiang.

DiJiang was first mentioned in ancient Chinese records in 400 BC entitled Classic of Mountains and Seas. This record itself is believed to contain a list of mythical creatures and the location where they can be found. DiJiang is believed to be the personification of Hundun—the power of chaos that gives birth to all things. These creatures love to enjoy music and dance.

2. Fenghuang

Another creature that appears in the Classic of Mountains and Seas. Fenghuang is often compared to Phoenix because of the similarities between the two. This creature is the ruler of all birds and is a combination of several animals—depending on the ancient records that describe it.

This bird appears in Chinese mythology for more than 8,000 years and is often used as a symbol of virtue or good luck. In the past, the name Feng was used for the male, while Huang was used for the female. However, starting in the Yuan Dynasty, people began to name the two as one.

3. Huli Jing

Huli Jing is a nine-tailed fox—or so-called Kyuubi in the Japanese version of mythology. This creature is often the inspiration of modern fiction. In the Classic of Mountains and Seas records, Huli Jing is said to have had a baby-like voice and ate humans. If eaten, the flesh has properties to treat all kinds of insect poisons.

Over time, Huli Jing is known as an ignorant spirit whose appearance can be interpreted as a sign of impending disaster or fortune. Huli Jing is also said to have the ability to transform into a beautiful woman.

4. Shishi (Guardian Lions)

Shishi became creatures that were often displayed in palaces or temples. Shishi are believed to have been inspired by lions that were brought to China during the silk trade during the Han Dynasty. Gradually, Shishi adapted to local beliefs and became an important being when Buddhism became the majority religion at that time. Shishi is believed to be the guardian of dharma—or it can also be called a truth.

5. Qilin

Qilin—also known as Kirin in Japanese mythology—is a horse-like creature that has horns and some body parts (especially the head) that are similar to dragons. Qilin is the oldest mythological creature on this list. He is first mentioned in The Commentary of Zuo in the 5th century BC.

Qilin is believed to be the pet of the gods and its appearance is a good sign of the birth of a god/emperor's lineage. Qilin statues are common in some Chinese palaces, but can also be found in other East Asian countries.

6. Dragon (Long)

Dragon, nicknamed by Ying Nan, Shang Chi's aunt, as The Great Protector, is inspired by the classic Chinese dragon—or what is commonly called Long. Just like the original version, this dragon is shaped like a snake and has no wings. In addition, he also has thick hair like a lion.

In ancient Chinese culture, dragons were associated with the power of sacred gods as well as emperors—who were believed to be children of the sky or heaven. Dragon Long is often said to have the power to control wind and water, rule the sky, and flow water in rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. Some dragons can even transform into humans.

By the Chinese themselves, the dragon is a symbol of strength, virtue, wisdom, strength, and luck for thousands of years to this day.
