1. Earth Defense Force

In this game series, we play as members of the Earth Defense Force who must fight off the invasion of alien forces. Enemies you have to face include giant insects, robots armed with advanced lasers, UFOs and even Godzilla-like kaiju. 

2. Rampage

• Platform: Arcade, PS1, PS2, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox

I’m sure gamers of the PS1 era are already familiar with this particular title. Here we are tasked to ravage cities around the world as giant monsters. From Lizzie the lizard, George the gorilla, to Myukus the alien, various creatures are at your disposal. And yes, the Rampage film, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was an adaptation of this game series. 

3. War of the Monsters

• Platform: PS2

As the title suggests, this game features both monsters and giant robots. In the game’s story, the fuel of the future ends up creating dangerous monsters that ravage the Earth. Then you have to fight each other either as a robot that protects justice or a monster bent on destruction. 

4. King of the Monsters

• Platform: Arcade, SNES, PS2, PSP, Wii

Unfortunately this is not a game adaptation of the Godzilla: King of the Monsters movie. In this arcade game you can choose from a selection of giant monsters and heroes then duke it out in the middle of the city. The battle ends when time runs out or you pin your opponent for three seconds just like a wrestling game. 

5. Pacific Rim

• Platform: Xbox 360, Android, iOS

This movie-adaptation game is not exactly a spectacular title by any means. However, for mecha and kaiju fans, Pacific Rim can definitely still scratch that itch. In addition to playing as the kaiju or Jaegers from the film, you can create your own Jaeger mecha by combining parts.

6. Godzilla

• Platform: Arcade, NES, SNES, GameCube, Wii, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, NDS, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, Xbox, Android, iOS

Besides appearing on the big screen, the king of monsters also often gets game adaptations thanks to its worldwide popularity. For now, the last Godzilla game was released for PS3 and PS4. 

7. Ultraman

• Platform: Arcade, SNES, Wii, Gameboy, NDS, PS1, PS2, PSP, Android, iOS

Talking about kaiju feels incomplete if you don't also talk about the giant heroes as well. Like Godzilla, Ultraman has also been featured in a bunch of video games. Unfortunately, you could say almost all of its games have never been released outside of Japan. 

8. Attack of the Friday Monsters

In Attack of the Friday Monsters! you will follow the daily life of a boy named Sohta who lives in a small town in Japan. The funny thing is, every Friday, the townsfolk are always bothered by the arrival of kaiju and giant heroes who fight near their homes. 

9. City Shrouded in Shadow

• Platform: PS4

Whereas Attack of the Friday Monsters features battles between giants in a more relaxed atmosphere, like in cartoons and TV shows, City Shrouded in Shadow is a much more serious game. If you've ever imagined what it's like to be trapped in the middle of a kaiju and Ultraman battle, then this game is a must-play for you. In addition to presenting a tense scenario of saving yourself in the midst of the chaos, this game also features various monsters, heroes, and robots from the Godzilla, Ultraman, Gamera, Patlabor, and Neon Genesis Evangelion series. Unfortunately, the game is only available in Japanese.
