'Ao Ashi' just got its anime adaptation, which was released on 9 April 2022. The sports-themed anime is an adaptation of the manga by Yugo Kobayashi, which has been published by Shogakukan since 2015. The anime adaptation of 'Ao Ashi' will be directed by Akira Sato from Studio Production IG who also produced Ultraman, Moriarty The Patriot, Blue Spring Ride, and Ghost in the Shell. With Masahiro Yokotani as the scriptwriter.

Ao Ashi follows a teenager named Ashito Aoi, from Ehime prefecture, a remote village in Japan. He has a deep passion for football yet he tends to play selfishly, a shortcoming to his game that eventually makes him lose a deciding match, and fail to get into a favorite high school with an elite football club. Just when he runs along the shore trying to shake off his emotions after the defeat, he comes across a man who’s watching a game. 

That person is Tatsuya Fukuda, a J-Youth-League coach at Tokyo City Esperion FC. After knowing Ashito Aoi’s abilities, Fukuda invites him for a trial in Tokyo. Ashito’s techniques are yet to be honed, but Fukuda believes that Ashito has a special talent and limitless potential in football.

1. Ashito Aoi

(VA: Kouki Ohsuzu)

The main character of Ao Ashi. He’s a first-year student and a member of the Tokyo City Esperion FC. He has curly brown hair and brown eyes. He usually wears his Esperion uniform. Ashito is initially a brash kid, but he begins to realize his lack of football techniques and knowledge in comparison to his peers. Once he acknowledges his shortcomings, he asks anyone around him to help him improve and shows his eagerness to learn and drive to better himself.

2. Tatsuya Fukuda

(VA: Chikahiro Kobayashi)

He’s the Tokyo City Esperion FC youth coach and the first person who acknowledges Ashito’s abilities and recruits him. He is 34-year-old, has dark hair, and standing at an average height. He is a former Japanese national team midfielder and played for Sabadell FC, which recently got promoted to Spain’s top division, La Liga.

3. Eisaku Otomo

(VA: Tatsumaru Tachibana)

This character also partakes in the trial alongside Ashito and Tachibana. He’s the mood maker on the team and someone who cares deeply about everyone. As a midfielder, he keeps the backline and the offensive line connected and run smoothly. 

4. Soichiro Tachibana

(VA: Seiichiro Yamashita)

Soichiro used to play for the Yokoyama Musashino Junior Youth, yet during the last year, he began to feel that his growth as a player was stalled. To avoid being a useless player, he joined Esperion Youth as a forward. Although he sometimes says crazy things without looking at others, he’s a serious individual who has a strong sense of responsibility. 

5. Jun Martis

(VA: Wataru Katou)

This flamboyant blonde is a graduate of Esperion Junior Youth. His mother is Japanese, while his father is an Englishman. He plays as the wing-back who is good at attacking. He can be quite arrogant, and often expresses his displeasure seeing someone like Ashito gets to play for the youth team, therefore he often talks down to Ashito.
