Sonic the Hedgehog has become the most successful franchise from Paramount Pictures. The first movie of the live-action/CGI hybrid series was a massive hit in 2020, followed by the success of the sequel earlier this year. Now, Paramount Pictures is working on the third movie of the series. On Monday (08/08), Paramount Pictures officially announced the release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is earlier than expected, on 20 December 2024. Here’s the announcement:

This announcement has bigger implications for the Sonic franchise. Paramount Pictures had previously planned for a Smurf animated musical to hit theaters in December 2024. But now that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been given that time slot, the movie studio has moved Smurf to February 2025.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie hit theaters in early 2020. After almost 3 years, the sequel was released on 8 April 2022. The official announcement was also made by the CEO of SEGA Corporation, Haruki Satomi:

"We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live-action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed. We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise with them. Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come."

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie mostly focused on Sonic, voiced by Ben Schwartz. Whereas Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced other iconic characters from the popular Sega video game, including Tails and Knuckles. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was first confirmed earlier this year, along with work on a new live-action focusing on Knuckles. Voiced by Idris Elba, Knuckles will also be on Paramount+, aside from the movie version. Tails will be voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey, the original voice cast for the character in the game.
