Rumors about the PlayStation 5 (PS5) Pro are getting stronger, and several leaks regarding its specifications are starting to emerge. According to a report from Gizmochina, the PS5 Pro is expected to be released in September 2024, with a number of updates to make it more attractive. Reportedly, the launch of the PS5 Pro is also related to the release of the GTA VI game which is scheduled for 2025.
One of the main changes to the PS5 Pro is the use of the Viola CPU with the Zen2 architecture that previously existed on the PS5. However, the CPU frequency will likely be dynamic, with peaks reaching 4.4GHz. The processor will be equipped with 64 KB of L1 cache per core, 512 KB of L2 cache per core, and 8 MB of shared L3 (4 MB per CCX).
Using the Viola CPU on the PS5 Pro will result in power consumption of around 30WGP when fully used. However, there will only be 28WGP (56 CU) enabled for the retail version of PS5 Pro. In addition, PS5 Pro will introduce Trinity, namely three main technologies that will improve the performance of this console. These include fast storage, accelerated ray tracing, and improved graphics performance.
The console will use the RDNA3 architecture with improvements in ray tracing from RDNA4. BVH traversal will be addressed by dedicated RT hardware rather than relying solely on 3584 shaders for better performance. PS5 Pro will also be equipped with 16GB RAM from GDDR6 18GBps and has a memory capacity of 256-bit with a memory bandwidth of up to 576 GB/s.
The PS5 Pro's target GPU frequency is 2.0 GHz, which will result in approximately 28.67 peak TFLOPs. This represents a significant improvement compared to the previous model. Additionally, rasterization improvements are anticipated to be around 50-60% compared to previous versions, Oberon and Oberon Plus, with twice the raw RT performance. The XDNA2 NPU will also be introduced to accelerate Sony's custom-built temporal machine learning techniques, one of the main focuses in the PS5 Pro.
With these impressive specifications, the PS5 Pro is expected to provide a better and more stable 4K gaming experience with frame rates higher than 30 FPS. Even though this is still a rumor, PlayStation fans will certainly be looking forward to further information and an official announcement from Sony regarding the appearance of the PS5 Pro which fans have been waiting for.
