In the fast-paced world of technology, change is the only constant. Most recently, Steam, a leading digital distribution platform, announced a major move by ending support for older versions of Windows. Starting January 1, 2024, Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 will no longer be compatible with Steam. This decision has significant implications, especially considering the rumors circulating about Windows 12 launching in the second half of 2024.

Microsoft itself launched Windows 11 just three years ago, but technological development has never stopped. This update may signal that Windows 11 will soon become obsolete, a cycle that keeps repeating itself in the world of technology. With the advent of Windows 12, we can anticipate more advanced features and capabilities, pushing the boundaries of what the operating system can do.

Steam's decision didn't come as much of a surprise to many people, although its announcement in March 2023 did raise concerns. Now, with the deadline fast approaching, the reality of these changes is starting to sink in. Steam's November 2023 Hardware and Software Survey showed that only 1% of its users were still using older versions of Windows. However, with over 1.2 billion Steam users as of December 2023, this 1% means around 12 million people are affected.

This end of support isn't just about numbers or percentages; it is about changes that affect millions of individuals. Some may stick with older operating systems for reasons of nostalgia, habit, or financial constraints. However, with the end of Steam support for legacy Windows, users should consider switching to a newer operating system.

The importance of this change goes beyond just ensuring compatibility with Steam. Popular games like PUBG: Battlegrounds have also announced that they will not be playable on older versions of Windows. This speaks to a wider trend in the industry, where software and games continue to adapt to the latest technology.

Faced with this reality, legacy Windows users must prepare themselves for the transition. Updating to a newer operating system like the upcoming Windows 10, 11, or 12 not only ensures access to Steam and the latest games, but also brings greater security and efficiency.

In a rapidly changing world, adaptation is key. Steam's discontinuation of support for legacy Windows is a reminder that to stay relevant and enjoy the latest technology, we must be willing to move forward and embrace change.
