Usually, superhero and supervillain characters become favorite characters not only because of their strength, but also because of their costume designs. Here are six figures of superheroes and supervillains who are loved by many people thanks to their spooky, skull-covered faces!
1. Red Skull - Marvel
Captain America's arch-enemy was originally named Johann Shmidt. He was a subordinate of Adolf Hitler, leader of the German Nazi party during World War II. Shmidt is assigned to command a secret terrorist squad to intimidate their enemies and is given a red skull mask as a form of propaganda. However, the Red Skull was not satisfied with just being Hitler's right hand man and preparing other plans if the Nazis and the Axis lost against the Allies and Captain America.
After World War II, Shmidt was put into suspended animation after inhaling experimental gases when Allied forces bombed his base. Later he was discovered by the organization A.I.M. and revived. After that, former Nazi scientist Arnim Zola managed to transfer the memories of the Red Skull to the cloned body of Captain America. Then Shmidt, with a new identity as John Smith, managed to infiltrate the center of the United States government, Washington, and tried to replace Steve Rogers with John Walker as the new Captain America that he could control. However, the plan failed and he was betrayed by Walker instead. At that moment, Red Skull accidentally inhaled one of his own poison weapons, causing his face to transform into a real "red skull". Then he took over the ex-Nazi Baron von Strucker's HYDRA terrorist organization to build his influence in the criminal underworld.
Prior to obtaining the cloned body of Captain America, Red Skull was feared by both friends and foes because of his intelligence and was a very talented strategist and political operative. In his youth he was also trained in self-defense and various firearms personally by teachers appointed by Hitler himself.
2. Ghost Rider - Marvel
In order to save his father's life, Johnny Blaze, a stunt biker, sold his soul to the demon Mephisto and combined his body with the demon Zarathos. At night and smelling evil, Blaze's body will burn and turn his head into a skull covered in flames. To protect the weak and punish the wrong, a Ghost Rider is armed with a chain whip, a fiery vehicle, and a Penance Stare; a look that makes one feel all the trauma and pain that he has caused throughout his life.
Apart from Johnny Blaze, several others have also taken the name Ghost Rider:
- Danny Ketch: Johnny's long lost brother. When he and his sister, Barbara, are hunted by gangsters, Danny touches a magic symbol motorcycle that turns him into a Ghost Rider. In addition to Ghost Rider's general abilities, Danny is able to control how much trauma his Penance Stare generates.
- Alejandra Jones: A Nicaraguan woman who was able to get the power of the Ghost Rider from a ritual performed by someone named Adam. Her powers are lost when Johnny Blaze reclaims the ability.
- Robbie Reyes: A young Latin American who tries to get away from gang life by working as a mechanic by day, and doing illegal races to make money at night. He transforms into Ghost Rider when he is attacked by mercenaries who are looking for drugs hidden in the car from the repair shop he is secretly using.
- Vengeance: Former New York cop Michael Badilino gets Ghost Rider's exact powers from a mysterious amulet called the Organic Medallion of Power.
3. Atomic Skull - DC
The Atomic Skull name has been used for two different characters:
The first Atomic Skull was Albert Michaels, a S.T.A.R. Labs scientist. He is extremely intelligent but has a neurological disease that causes him to have painful seizures. Failing to find a cure, Michaels asks the criminal organization SKULL to provide him with a device that can turn his nervous spasms into atomic explosions. However, the explosive attack turned out to be difficult to control and only made his condition worse. He then blames and hunts down Superman after the only SKULL scientist who can cure the condition is captured by Superman.
The second was Joseph Martin, a student who came to S.T.A.R. Labs for routine check-up. At the same time, he is hit by an energy blast from the alien Dominators’ attack which gives him the superpower to shoot radiation and turn his skin transparent. Unfortunately, he suffered a concussion that led Martin to think he was the Atomic Skull, the main character of the films he often watched.

4. Taskmaster - Marvel
Since childhood Tony Masters was able to imitate the movements of everyone he saw, either live or even through TV, aka having "photographic reflexes". Tony immediately uses his abilities to make money -- from watching records of pro players and being a member of a talented football team to finally watching superheroes in action and opening a secret criminal-training service. His first action against real superheroes is fighting the Avengers who are trying to close his business. Tony easily reads Iron Man and Captain America's moves, but when he has to fight the robot Jocasta, he gets confused and runs away.
Since then he has traveled around America and has continued to open his business, as well as taking other jobs as a mercenary as long as the pay is deemed sufficient. Taskmaster is considered an iconic character thanks to the all-white hood, skull mask, and a shield similar to Captain America's that he always carries around. And although he looks kinda scary, Taskmaster is actually quite a chill person and he even has a friendly rivalry with Deadpool.
5. Black Mask - DC
Roman Sionis is the son of a wealthy couple who only cares about their social status in Gotham City, in fact they always cover up the problems that occur in their family so that they can continue mingling with other elites, including the Wayne Family they actually hate. This makes Roman hate his parents and people's obsession with the "masks" they have to wear to get along.
After graduating from high school, Roman was recruited into his father's cosmetics company, Janus Cosmetics, and fell in love with a model named Circe. When their relationship was rejected by Roman's parents, he went crazy and burned down the house and his parents along with it. However, despite inheriting the fortunes and business, Roman is not an adept businessman and bankrupted Janus Cosmetics. His desperate attempt went awry, when the company end up releasing a failed cosmetic product that ruined the faces of hundreds of Gotham women. Circe, his fiancé, broke off their relationship in front of the entire staff of Janus Cosmetics.
Bruce Wayne, who now heads Wayne Enterprises, intends to save Janus Cosmetics on the condition that Bruce can choose his own board of directors and Roman loses full control of the company. Humiliated and angry, Roman breaks into the graveyard where his parents are buried, crushes his parents' coffin with stones, then uses the pieces of wood to carve his own "mask"; now reborn as Black Mask. In a matter of months Black Mask succeeded in gathering his own men and building a criminal organization called the False Face Society. These days Black Mask’s mask is equipped with advanced technology that allows him to control other people's thoughts and change his face.
6. Blight - DC
Appearing in the animated series Batman Beyond, Derek Powers is the CEO of the Powers Tech company that successfully merged with Wayne Enterprises, now named Wayne-Powers. He then develops a dangerous nerve gas to sell as a weapon and kills one of his employees, Warren McGinnis, who knows of the plan. That eventually pushed his son, Terry McGinnis, into becoming Batman and messed up all of Powers' plans. Plus he was exposed to the noxious gas itself.
In order to save his life, Powers had to be given extreme radiation, but as a side effect his entire body became radioactive while his skin became translucent and greenish. He can hide his body condition with artificial skin, which slowly peeled off especially when his emotions got out of control and his body's radiation levels continued to rise.
Powers has the power to emit nuclear radiation that causes burns and dizziness or manipulates it into energy waves. His incredibly hot body makes him immune to ordinary attacks and even melts high-tech Batsuits.
