Exciting news has emerged from the Chess competition at the 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The EWC 2025 Chess competition will bring together Grand Masters and renowned chess players from around the world representing various esports organizations.
New names have been confirmed for the competition, including Magnus Carlsen (Team Liquid), Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons), Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons), Fabiano Caruana (Team Liquid), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Team Vitality), Arjun Erigaisi (Gen.G Esports), Wei Yi (Weibo Gaming), Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Twisted Minds), and various other emerging chess players.

Magnus Carlsen Defeats Alireza Firouzja, Becomes Chess EWC 2025 Champion
The Chess EWC 2025 tournament, which runs from July 29, 2025, to August 1, 2025, features renowned chess players from around the world representing various leading esports teams in the Esports World Cup 2025 competition. A total of 16 renowned chess players from various teams will participate in this competition.
The 16 players will be divided into four groups, each of which will play in a double-elimination bracket format. The Group Stage concluded, with a total of eight chess players advancing to the Playoffs: Ian Nepomniachtchi (Aurora Gaming), Arjun Erigaisi (Gen.G Esports), Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Natus Vincere), Magnus Carlsen (Team Liquid), Nihal Sarin (Team S8UL), Levon Aronian (REJECT), and Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons).
A total of four chess players advanced to the semifinals: Arjun Erigaisi (Gen.G Esports), Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons), Magnus Carlsen (Team Liquid), and Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons). In the first semifinal match, Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons) defeated Arjun Erigaisi 4-1.
A heated match between Magnus Carlsen (Team Liquid) and Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons) was presented, ultimately won by Magnus Carlsen with a score of 4-3. Arjun Erigaisi and Hikaru Nakamura advanced to the Third Place Match, where Magnus Carlsen would face Alireza Firouzja to determine who would be crowned Chess EWC 2025 champion. In the Third Place Match, Hikaru Nakamura defeated Arjun Erigaisi with a score of 3.5-2.5.
In the Grand Final, Magnus Carlsen finally defeated Alireza Firouzja with a score of 6-2, becoming the Chess EWC 2025 champion, bringing 1,000 Club Championship points to his representative team, Team Liquid. This certainly marks a new milestone for Magnus Carlsen, the 2025 EWC Chess Champion.
As the 2025 EWC Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen received a trophy and a total cash prize of US$250,000 and 1,000 EWC Championship points. Runner-up Alireza Firouzja took home a total cash prize of US$190,000 and 750 EWC Championship points. Third-place Hikaru Nakamura took home a total cash prize of US$145,000 and 500 EWC Championship points. Fourth-place Arjun Erigaisi took home a cash prize of US$115,000 and 300 EWC Championship points.
