You are pretty sure familiar with the Playstation console by Sony. If you’re playing Playstation, you’ll recognize those unique symbols on the controller. Usually, Indonesians called the controller as “stik PS.” Did you know if this joystick comes in various kinds, there is one with analogs and there’s one without it?

There are many buttons on PS joystick, starting from L1, L2, R1, R2, L3, R3, Start, Select, Analog, right d-pad, left d-pad, down d-pad, up d-pad, as well as Cross, Square, Triangle, and Circle. Each button has its function, in which we are very sure that Playstation gamers already familiar with these buttons.

Following the symbols in the Playstation joystick, there is one unique thing that maybe some people don’t know yet. Have you ever wonder why symbols on the joystick using cross, square, triangle, and circle?

According to the Playstation joystick designer, Teiyu Goto, each symbol has its meaning. Every symbol is to differ from other controllers that already existed, like Nintendo and Sega, in which they’re using ABC XYZ.

Teiyu Goto also stated that the use of cross, square, triangle, and circle will make players remember quickly. It’s because people tend to remember symbols quickly than letters. So, he decided to put symbols rather than using letters.

Then, does each symbol has its function aside from getting remembered easily? Goto stated that each button has it. Like the green triangle, it means a point of view or pointing forward, the pink square pointing on a piece of paper (maps, menu, or important documents). It’s also the only button to receive distinct color.

And as for the circle and cross, both mean “Yes” and “No”, respectively. These buttons are pointing on Japanese culture that interprets the circle as a yes/ agree and the cross as a no/ disagree. So that’s the meaning of those symbols on Playstation joystick.
