The Apothecary Diaries series is based on a series of novels written by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Megumi Matsuda. The anime is directed by Norihiko Naganuma, who also serves as a series composer, and assistant director by Akinori Fudesaka at TOHO Animation Studio and OLM.

The anime story itself tells the story of Maomao, a 17-year-old female pharmacist who lives in a brothel area. One day he was suddenly kidnapped and sold until he became a servant in the royal palace. Due to her experience living with her father who was a medicine expert, while at the palace Maomao became curious about a rumor involving the mystery of a curse between the concubines and ladies-in-waiting.

Thanks to her ability, knowledge, and sharp analysis, Maomao managed to find a cure for a disease circulating among the concubines, allowing her to be promoted from a low-ranking servant. Her success in finding a solution to this existing problem attracted the attention of a eunuch named Jinshi and ultimately made Maomao have to be involved in various mysteries regarding various illnesses and mysterious events that occurred around the palace.
