Thunderbolts brings fresh energy to the MCU by blending old and new characters in a plot full of twists. The film isn’t just action-packed; it also dives deep into the internal struggles of its team members—especially Yelena Belova, who grows frustrated with her role as a "cleaner" for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The movie’s ending opens up a strong possibility of a new conflict brewing in the MCU.
The story revolves around a team led by Yelena and Bucky Barnes, joined by Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, Ghost, and a new character named Bob. When Val faces legal trouble, she attempts to eliminate her own team to cover her tracks. Taskmaster becomes a casualty, while the others flee. Tensions rise when it’s revealed that Bob is a superpowered experiment who sides with Val.
Bob’s true identity as The Sentry—an MCU version of a troubled superhero with god-like powers—throws the situation into chaos. His traumatic past and history of addiction make him easy prey for Val, who pretends to be a motherly figure to gain his trust. However, Bob is not a true hero but rather a failed experiment harboring a dark alter ego known as The Void.
Once The Void awakens, Bob loses control and nearly destroys everything, including Val. Although Val had implanted a kill switch in Bob’s brain to stop him temporarily, his darker side doesn't die. The Void emerges as a terrifying new entity, capable of trapping people in a traumatic realm where they must relive their worst memories.
Yelena enters The Void’s realm to save Bob. There, they find him hiding in the attic of his childhood—his mental safe space. With the help of the Thunderbolts, Bob learns to confront and control his darkness. The film’s emotional conclusion suggests that saving the world isn’t just about strength, but also about healing and self-acceptance.
After saving New York, Val spins the truth at a press conference, claiming the Thunderbolts as her creation and rebranding them as the New Avengers. While the team initially resists, Yelena negotiates a deal. Still, public opinion remains divided, as many find the new lineup—a mix of former antiheroes and failed experiments—hard to accept compared to the original Avengers.
However, the transformation of the Thunderbolts into the New Avengers could ignite a larger conflict. Some MCU heroes may reject the idea of their legacy being replaced by morally ambiguous figures. With The Void still lurking and Valentina pushing a hidden agenda, a major war between superhero factions could be looming in the MCU’s future.
