The action film Top Gun: Maverick starring Tom Cruise, and its collaboration with the anime Uma Musume Pretty Derby, has been a success in Japan since the collaboration was released on May 27, 2022. The official Twitter account for the Uma Musume project announced that on the third weekend of the Top Gun: Maverick film premiere, theaters in Japan will be distributing cards showing Uma Musume visuals to ticket holders for Top Gun: Maverick.

As reported by Otakomu, cinemas in Japan will distribute up to 300,000 cards in total, starting from June 10, 2022. As per the collaboration project, the horse girl Mayano Top Gun is a "promoted pilot" and is imitating Tom Cruise's pose in the movie poster.

The girls from Uma Musume Pretty Derby are said to be spirited and bear the name of a famous racehorse, but aside from the name, Mayano's character designs are also heavily inspired by the film Top Gun. The pony girl is wearing a flying jacket and parachute rope, saying words like "You copy?", and her skill animation even shows her parachuting from a plane.

Top Gun's official Twitter account has acknowledged this special relationship with their franchise, and even posted a tweet celebrating the racehorse's birthday. The collaboration was first announced last September 2021, ahead of the planned premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in Japan on November 19, 2021. However, the film's release schedule was postponed to May 27, 2022 in Japan and the United States due to COVID-19.
