Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema Officially Announce Mortal Kombat 2, Set for October 2025 Release
Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema have officially confirmed the release of the sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat film. Titled Mortal Kombat 2, the upcoming movie will once again be directed by Simon McQuoid, with a screenplay written by Jeremy Slater. It is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide, including Indonesia, on October 24, 2025.
Production began in mid-2023 but was temporarily halted due to the Hollywood writers' and actors' strikes. However, filming has since resumed, promising improved visual effects and a more refined storyline that stays truer to the original video game source material.
A Shift Toward Classic Mortal Kombat Lore
Unlike the first film, which introduced an original character named Cole Young, the sequel will focus more on the classic roots of the Mortal Kombat franchise. The story will center on Johnny Cage, a Hollywood martial arts actor recruited to compete in the Mortal Kombat tournament to save Earthrealm from a looming invasion.
The central conflict will revisit old threats, including Shao Kahn, who seeks to resurrect Shang Tsung. He is aided by Quan Chi, a necromancer capable of reviving fallen warriors. The Mortal Kombat tournament once again becomes the ultimate battleground between the forces of Earthrealm and the dark power of Outworld.
Confirmed Characters and Cast:
-
Johnny Cage (Karl Urban)
-
Liu Kang (Ludi Lin)
-
Raiden (Tadanobu Asano)
-
Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee)
-
Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks)

The film promises more intense fight choreography and brutal action, staying faithful to the violent, high-impact style of the original video game series.
Joe Taslim Returns as Bi-Han — Now Reborn as Noob Saibot
Indonesian actor Joe Taslim reprises his role as Bi-Han, previously known as Sub-Zero in the first film. However, this time, the character returns in a darker form: Noob Saibot. This transformation follows Bi-Han’s death in the first film and his resurrection by Quan Chi as a shadowy wraith warrior.
In the Mortal Kombat lore, Noob Saibot is a mysterious figure with the power to manipulate shadows and create black-clone duplicates of himself. His inclusion in the sequel signifies a deeper exploration of the game’s dark mythologies.
Joe Taslim’s portrayal of Sub-Zero in the 2021 film received critical acclaim for his brutal fight scenes and commanding screen presence. The film concluded with a climactic battle between Sub-Zero and his eternal rival, Scorpion. His return as Noob Saibot is highly anticipated by fans worldwide, especially in Indonesia, where Taslim is considered a national star.
Taslim even joked on social media about his comeback, calling Noob Saibot the “master of ghosting,” referring to the character’s ability to vanish and reappear like a shadow.
Brutality, Lore, and Deeper Character Arcs Await in Mortal Kombat 2
Set to release in October 2025, Mortal Kombat 2 promises a more faithful adaptation of the video game, more brutal action, and deeper character development. Joe Taslim’s return as Noob Saibot adds another layer of excitement, strengthening Indonesia's presence in the global film industry.
