League of Legends World Championship 2023 is about to start! Learn more about the competition and how to purchase the 2023 Worlds Primer merchandise.

What is the World Championship or Worlds Primer?

The League of Legends World Championship, also known as Worlds Primer, is the pinnacle of the LoL Esports competition where the best teams from nine regions compete to win the title of world champion.

Held after the culmination of the regular season in a different host region each year, qualifying teams from professional leagues around the world will participate in this tournament. This year, South Korea will host the tournament.

The Worlds Qualifying Series will be a best-of-five match between Team BDS (4th seed from LEC) and Golden Guardians (4th seed from LCS) on October 9 at LoL Park, Seoul.

The WQS winner, along with 21 other teams, will compete at Worlds, with 8 of them starting competition at the Play-In Stage. This seed allocation is determined by the previous international performance of each region.

The 2023 Worlds Primer Theme

The theme for this year’s Worlds is “THE GRIND. THE GLORY.” As the confetti flies and the trophy rises, we witness nothing but victory. In reality: There is no victory without struggle.

Behind every World Championship title, there is a tireless dedication to achieving their skills, relentless hard work, and a long, arduous journey that got them there.

This theme represents a bold dichotomy, where we embrace the duality of the pro player's journey and enjoy both as part of the chase: the darkness, the never-ending struggle, and the rays of hope and victory that await in the World Finals.

Schedules for the 2023 Worlds Primer

Worlds begin with the Play-In Stage on October 10 and will conclude with the Finals on November 19. You can see the details below:

  • Play-In Stage: 10-14 October 2023 at 14:00 WIB, and 15 October 2023 at 10:00 WIB
  • Swiss Stage: 19-20 October 2023 at 12:00 WIB, and 21-28 October at 14:00 WIB, and 29 October at 11:00 WIB
  • Knockout Stage: November 2-12 at 15:00 WIB
  • Grand Final: November 19 at 15:00 WIB

Formats

The new Worlds format will feature 22 teams in three competition stages: Play-In Stage, Swiss Stage, and Knockout Stage (Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals).

1. Play-Ins

Play-In will start the tournament with the 1st and 2nd seeds from VCS & PCS, the 1st seeds from LLA, CBLOL, and LJL, as well as the winner of the Worlds Qualifying Series between the 4th seeds LCS and LEC.

These 8 teams have been drawn and entered into two best-of-three double-elimination brackets. The team that wins the top ranking from each bracket will face the second-ranked team from the other bracket in the best-of-five final match. The winner of each match will earn a place in the Swiss Stage.

The format of the first 10 matches is best-of-three and the final two matches are best-of-five.

2. Swiss Stage

The two teams that qualify for the Play-In Stage will join the top 3 seed teams from LEC and LCS and the top 4 seed teams from LCK and LPL. These 16 teams will be divided into four drawing pools—Seed 1, Seed 2, Seed 3, and Seed 4 + Play-In Qualifier.

They will be drawn to be entered into the initial 8 best-of-one matches based on their seeding.

Pool 1 teams will play against Pool 4 teams and Pool 2 teams will play against Pool 3 teams. Additionally, no team will play against a team from their own region in the first round.

After the first round of matches, there will be another draw for the second round to pit teams with the same record against each other—this time the draw is held without any particular restrictions.

The tournament will repeat this process for 3 more rounds of play, pitting teams with even records against each other until they reach 3 wins to advance, or 3 losses to be eliminated from the competition.

There are a total of 8 teams that will advance to the Knockout. While the initial round is best-of-one, all advanced matches and eliminations will use a best-of-three system.

During the Swiss Stage, the selection of the blue or red team will be determined by the initial draw pool—the higher pool will receive the team selection. In matches between teams from the same draw pool, the selection of the blue or red team will be determined by tossing a coin.

3. Knockout Stage and Finals

Eight teams will advance to the Knockout Stage, which includes the Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals. At this stage, the tournament switched to a single elimination bracket with all matches played in a best-of-five format.

Quarterfinal matches will be determined via an on-stage draw after the final day of the Swiss Stage. In this drawing, teams advancing with a 3-0 record will be matched against teams advancing with a 3-2 record. The remaining teams will then be pitted against each other.

The team that emerges as the winner will become the 2023 World Champion.

When Will the 2023 Worlds be Held?

  • The Play-In Stage will be held at LoL Park, Seoul.
  • Swiss Stage will be held at KBS Arena, Seoul.
  • The Quarterfinals and Semifinals were held at Sajik Indoor Gymnasium, Busan
  • The World Finals will be held on November 19 and take place at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, the largest indoor venue in the country and home of Seoul-based baseball team Kiwoom Heroes
