Trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run has been released on YouTube last Friday (17/10). Surprisingly, this two minutes trailer also shows unexpected faces, the actor of John Wick, Keanu Reeves.

In this third installment of the SpongeBob series, Reeves will get a quite unique role. Not as a martial artist which is his expertise, Reeves will take part as a wise tumbleweed who helps SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star’s journey.

Even that it’s quite unique, this isn’t the first time for a Hollywood actor to have a cameo appearance in a SpongeBob movie. In the first installment, there’s David Hasselhoff, who plays as himself. Meanwhile, in the second one, Sponge out of Water, there’s Antonio Banderas, who plays as the character Burger-Beard.

In this Sponge on The Run, we will see Spongebob’s journey to look for his kidnapped snail pet. Together with Patrick, Spongebob went to the Lost City of Atlantic City to save Gary.

While previously, we’re seeing Spongebob’s world with the typical animation with the occasional live-action, in this movie, it’s going to be completely different. For the first time ever, Spongebob movie will be animated in stylized CG in a way that makes it look like a 2D picture. This is resulting in distinctively unique picture quality.

The movie Sponge on the Run itself has been planned to be released in 2020. Let’s wait to find out how significant Keanu Reeves’ appearance in the movie is when it premieres next year.
