Unlike many traditional heroes who fight supervillains, Wuyang, the newest support hero in Overwatch 2, battles something more personal: the guilt of not meeting his parents’ expectations and the struggle to create a life he can truly be proud of.

Wuyang’s narrative is part of Blizzard’s evolving approach to storytelling in Overwatch 2. Beyond representation of diverse backgrounds, the game now dives deeper into the lived experiences of its heroes.

• Hazard, the tank hero from Glasgow who endured a difficult childhood.

• The Pride 2025 event, highlighting the heartfelt relationship between Soldier 76 and Vincent.

These stories aim to make players feel more connected to the characters beyond gameplay.

Hero Design and Aspirational Style

Despite the heavy themes, Wuyang’s design still follows Overwatch’s principle of creating aspirational, stylish heroes. Lead concept artist Daryl Tan noted that while characters remain visually appealing and powerful, the team balances this with more grounded narratives.

This explains the trend of recent heroes looking “cool and heroic” rather than eccentric, as seen in past designs like Wrecking Ball or Ramattra. Still, Tan assured fans that non-human heroes will continue to appear in future seasons.

When Can Players Try Wuyang?

Much of Wuyang’s backstory unfolds outside the game, through trailers and lore materials. However, players will get a first taste of his water-based support abilities during the trial weekend (August 14–18). His official debut will arrive with Overwatch 2 Season 18 on August 26, 2025.
