Hana-Kimi Finally Gets an Anime Adaptation

After decades of waiting, the iconic shoujo manga Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (Hana-Kimi) is officially getting its very first anime adaptation. The announcement was met with excitement worldwide, especially among longtime fans who have followed the manga since the late 1990s.

The anime is set to premiere in January 2026, bringing new life to a story that has already been adapted into multiple live-action dramas in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. This marks the first time Mizuki Ashiya’s story will be told in animated form, a move that feels both nostalgic and refreshing.

A Classic Shoujo Story

Originally serialized between 1996 and 2004, Hana-Kimi tells the story of Mizuki Ashiya, a Japanese girl living in the United States. After watching a TV program featuring talented high jumper Izumi Sano, Mizuki becomes fascinated and decides she must meet him in person.

Determined to be closer to her idol, Mizuki disguises herself as a boy and transfers to Osaka Gakuen, an all-boys school where Sano is enrolled. Her secret, however, is quickly discovered by the eccentric school doctor Hokuto Umeda—and later by Sano himself. Instead of exposing her, Sano chooses to keep the secret and even helps her along the way.

This setup leads to a charming mix of comedy, friendship, and youthful romance, cementing Hana-Kimi as one of the most beloved shoujo manga of all time.

YOASOBI to Perform Both Opening and Ending

What makes this adaptation even more special is the involvement of YOASOBI, who will perform both the opening and ending songs for the anime. This is a rare decision, as anime usually feature two different artists for each theme song.

The duo, consisting of producer Ayase and vocalist Ikura, is no stranger to the anime world. Their hit single Idol, the opening for Oshi no Ko, became a global sensation and dominated music charts worldwide. With their signature emotional sound, YOASOBI is expected to deliver unforgettable songs that perfectly match Hana-Kimi’s heartfelt tone.

Anticipation Among Fans

The decision to finally adapt Hana-Kimi into anime feels long overdue. The manga has sold millions of copies, and its live-action dramas have all been well-received. Now, with an anime format and music by YOASOBI, Hana-Kimi is ready to capture the hearts of both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Veteran fans are thrilled to see Hisaya Nakajo’s classic work finally receive the animated treatment it deserves, while younger audiences will get to experience one of the most iconic shoujo romances in manga history.

With its premiere set for January 2026, the Hana-Kimi anime adaptation is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated titles of the Winter season. The combination of a timeless shoujo love story and the emotional power of YOASOBI’s music makes this adaptation a must-watch.

Whether you’re a longtime Hana-Kimi fan or someone discovering it for the first time, get ready for a story filled with romance, secrets, and laughter—now brought to life in anime form like never before.
