The PlayStation 1 was a massive hit in its era, especially in Indonesia, where it was played by people of all ages. No wonder its charm still holds strong today.
Of course, when talking about the PS1, Sony didn’t just make an ordinary console. In fact, it was packed with secret features that will leave you amazed! What are these hidden PS1 features that most gamers never knew about? Let’s dive in.
It Could Connect to the Internet
Back in the '90s, connecting a console to the internet seemed impossible. But surprisingly, the PS1 had the capability, even though most gamers didn’t know how to use it.
Sony proved that the PS1 was ahead of its time by releasing an add-on that could connect to mobile phones. This allowed users to access the internet via their phones, even enabling them to download certain games.
Play Games in HD Visual Quality
There’s no doubt that the PS1 was a groundbreaking console in terms of features. Sometimes, a little tweaking and exploration were needed to unlock its hidden potential. One such secret was its compatibility with High Definition TVs!
All you needed was a composite cable or an S-Video cable to enhance the visuals significantly. Alternatively, you could use an RGB SCART cable, though this required a signal converter.
While the image quality wasn’t the best by today’s standards, the fact that the PS1 could connect to HDTVs was truly impressive.
External Storage Compatibility
PS1 games initially required very little storage space. However, as larger titles like Final Fantasy VIII and The Legend of Dragoon emerged, the console’s limited memory became an issue.
Most players didn’t feel the need for external storage, but creative gamers found a workaround. A company called Datel developed the Memory Drive, a floppy disk drive that fit into the PS1’s memory card slot.
This allowed players to back up their games onto a floppy disk—a lifesaver if their game disc got damaged and they couldn’t afford a replacement.
