Marisa Tomei is an actress best known for her role as Aunt May in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man films. Her comedic acting also won an Oscar in the film My Cousin Vinny. 1. Never Wanted to Appear in Any Sequel but Captain America: Civil War Changes It
Although many opportunities arose to reprise a popular role, at first Marisa Tomei was not interested in returning to star in the same character she had previously played. She dropped out of the proposed My Cousin Vinny sequel, which was supposed to take place in the UK.
But when she was asked to reprise her role as Aunt May after appearing in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, Tomei finally agreed to join a film sequel project. Tomei's role as Aunt May sparked various reactions on social media in 2015. Marvel's loyal fans argued that Tomei was too beautiful to play the aunt of Peter Parker.
Tomei herself agreed with the response, as she revealed in a 2017 interview with The Guardian. She said “Fortunately I don't know much about Aunt May, because I might be surprised if I saw the original image of a gray-haired grandmother character. Don't play with my heart, Marvel. Is that really how Marvel sees me? ”
2. Her Biggest Fear is to Stumble Upon Receiving an Oscar
On the eve of the 1993 Oscars, Marisa Tomei was nominated for her critically acclaimed performance in My Cousin Vinny. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight before the event, Tomei joked that her worst fear was that she might stumble upon receiving the award.
On that night, as she won the award for Best Supporting Actress, Tomei actually stumbled as she climbed the stairs to the Oscar stage. Fortunately she didn't hurt himself.
Marissa Tomei wasn't the only artist to fall at the Academy Awards. In 2013, Jennifer Lawrence fell while stepping onto the stage to receive her Oscar. Bohemian Rhapsody actor Rami Malek also fell off the stage after receiving an Oscar in 2019.
3. Mona Lisa Vito was Almost Removed From the My Cousin Vinny Script
Marisa Tomei's big breakthrough came in 1992 when she starred in the film My Cousin Vinny as Vinny Gambini's (Joe Pesci) fiancé, Mona Lisa Vito. Her performance earned the young actress an Academy Award or an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, although Tomei's role was almost omitted from the film.
In 2007, Dale Launer told Writer Unboxed that the studio working on My Cousin Vinny originally wanted to remove Vinny's girlfriend from the script. Launer had to add another scene to give the character more screen time. "He wanted Vinny's girlfriend to complain that he wasn't giving her enough attention," Launer said.
“You often see movies where a man is desperate to achieve something, and you are working on it with him – and his wife/girlfriend/mother feels neglected. And the complained. And I HATE this!” However, the scene was funny enough to save the character and ended up being one of Launer's favorite scenes throughout the film.
4. Worked as a Waitress Before Landing Her First Role
Before she gained fame as an actress, Marisa Tomei was a student at Boston University. She studied there for a year before finally dropping out to pursue an acting career. While living in Boston, Tomei worked as a waiter at Tony Roma's, an American steakhouse chain.
That summer, she began auditioning for theater roles. She never returned to continue her studies at her university again after applying for her first job as an actress. Her first film role was as a waitress named Mandy in The Flamingo Kid, where she only had one line of dialogue.
She then appeared in the 1984 horror comedy The Toxic Avenger, playing a girl who worked at a health club. Tomei was not recognized for this minor role, but eight years later she made a breakthrough with her performance in My Cousin Vinny.
5. The Godmother Of X-Men Star Zoë Kravitz
Marisa Tomei became friends with Lisa Bonet when they starred in A Different World, so Bonet chose her as godmother to her daughter Zoë Kravitz. In a 2018 InStyle interview between Tomei and Kravitz, Tomei affectionately referred to Bonet as her "best friend".
Kravitz went on to say that Tomei played a big role in her life. Zoë Kravitz, has followed in the footsteps of her mother and godmother to a career on the big screen.
She played Angel Salvadore in X-Men: First Class and has starred in Divergent, Big Little Lies, and Mad Max: Fury Road, and will play Catwoman in The Batman.

6. Lady Gaga Wants Tomei to Play Her in a Biographical Film
In a 2011 interview with Rolling Stone, Lady Gaga was asked who would like to play her in a film. "I want Marisa Tomei to play me," replied Gaga. “I am a fan of Marisa Tomei.”
"All my friends call me Marisa when I'm angry," says Gaga. "Because my New York accent just disappeared and I started smacking my gums."
When Tomei heard this, the actress replied “I like it. I like the music. And she's an extraordinary businesswoman." Tomei also added, “So I was really touched, really. I think it's a great thing if she likes my acting and thinks about me.”
Unfortunately, there are no plans for a Lady Gaga biopic starring Tomei as of this writing. But many are waiting for Lady Gaga's Biopic film to materialize.
7. She is Very Good At Belly Dance
Marisa Tomei has been practicing belly dance, yoga, and tai chi for a long time to relieve her boredom after a busy day at work. In a 2010 interview with Shape, Tomei said: “Not only does belly dancing keep you in shape, it's also good for the female reproductive organs and hormones.”
Tomei told Shape that he is trained once a week by Nita Rubio, a dance, meditation, and body movement teacher. The actress regularly attends women-only classes hosted by Rubio that combine meditation, music, and dance.
8. He Fights with SNL Producers When Appearing on the Show
Marisa Tomei has clashed with some of the most influential people in the entertainment industry, one of which is the producer of Saturday Night Live (SNL). The producer invited Tomei to guest star in October 1994, but things didn't go well.
Tomei asked SNL's writers and producers to pull out a pre-recorded segment for a sketch of the show Good Morning Brooklyn. Tomei was worried that the play would portray her negatively and she was not happy with the idea of being stereotyped as being of Italian descent.
This annoyed the SNL team because essentially the show was mostly a satirical comedy that made fun of celebrities.
9. She Played Herself in the Seinfeld
A 1996 two-part episode of the sitcom series Seinfeld saw Marisa Tomei make a guest appearance, playing herself. In the series, self-proclaimed 'Lord of the Idiots', George Costanza, played by Jason Alexander, pursues Tomei for a girlfriend.
Costanza tries to win Tomei's heart with the help of his friend Elaine Benes, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. In the end Costanza managed to date Tomei, and the two met at a park.
Tomei also fell in love with Costanza. However, things took a turn when Costanza revealed that he was actually engaged to another woman. The date ends with Tomei punching Costanza in the face before she leaves in a rage.
10. Her Great Grandfather from Italy was Brutally Murdered by the Mafia
Marisa Tomei appeared on an episode of the NBC genealogy program Who Do You Think You Are? in 2012. To find out more about his great-grandfather, Tomei flew to Tuscany, Italy in search of answers.
She learns that his great-grandfather, Francesco Leopoldo Bianchi, was brutally murdered in 1911. Apparently, Tomei's great-grandfather was shot dead by the mafia in a bar in Tuscany. It is revealed that Bianchi is being hunted by the mafia due to money-loaning problems or an extramarital affair he has committed.
Tomei also realized that thanks to the program, she was able to trace her family tree back to the regions of Tuscany, Sicily, Campania, and Calabria.
