Want to know more about this popular and legendary fighting game? Let's look at the 10 facts about Street Fighter!
Games | 25 February
Street Fighter, which was released by CAPCOM in 1987, is a fighting game that is very influential in the video game industry. The first installation of Street Fighter was inspired by classic games such as Yie-Ar Kung Fu and Karate Champ. The fighting game was a success, but it wasn't until the 1991 release of Street Fighter II that the game franchise revolutionized and changed the landscape of the entertainment world.
To date, there are 5 main Street Fighter games that have been released, including the sixth game whose trailer appeared in February 2022. Besides that, there are also around 22 games that have been released from this popular franchise. Want to know more about this popular and legendary fighting game? Let's look at the 10 facts about Street Fighter!
1. Character Names Varies Based on Game Release Locations
Players in western and eastern countries know the Street Fighter II boss characters by different names. In the game's original Japanese release, Balrog is a fighter from Spain with claws, known as Vega in America. In Japan, Vega is the final boss, known in the United States as M. Bison. The reason for this change is because the boxer character, known in the United States as Balrog, is known as M. Bison in Japan.
"M. Bison" is a play on boxer Mike Tyson's name, or "Mike Bison." When the game was localized for sale in America, Capcom wanted to avoid a lawsuit from famous boxer Mike Tyson, so they scrambled the names of the three Shadaloo bosses. That's why since Street Fighter II, the main villain has a westernized name like M. Bison for a Thai dictator.
2. Street Fighter II is The First Fighting Game to Present Combo System
When the developer created Street Fighter II, one of their goals was to make it easier for gamers to perform the special moves of each character. However, doing so would have an unintended consequence as well.
Every time a player attacks, there is a time lag called "recovery frames". During this time lag, the character is momentarily frozen, giving his enemy a chance to fight back.
Similarly, when a player is hit, there are "flinch frames" where the character will be momentarily stunned. By making it easier to perform special moves, the game's programmers inadvertently shortened the "recovery frames" time for these moves than the opponent's "flinch frames". The result is that players can string these moves into a combo.
Instead of fixing this programming problem, CAPCOM allowed it to remain, and this combo became a staple in every fighting game. Other franchises such as Mortal Kombat and Tekken copied this, and the combo system is still used today in all fighting games. This revolution shows that this CAPCOM game was truly superior in its time and until now it still dominates the genre.
3. This Game was Adapted as A Movie, and the Movie was Adapted to A Game Similar to Mortal Kombat
The 90s generation must know or at least have heard of Street Fighter: The Movie. It was a film adaptation of the fighting game played by Jean-Claude Van Damme. The film was also adapted from the Street Fighter game franchise.
This is the only instance of a game being licensed from a movie that is also licensed from a game. This film is quite popular because it stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison in his last role before the famous actor died.
The game, which is adapted from the film, uses digital versions of animated photos of real people, such as in SEGA's Mortal Kombat.
4. Cyborg Ken was the Protagonist in a Side-Scrolling Game
A spin-off game from this franchise was released in 1990, with the title Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight. A side-scrolling platformer game, the protagonist is Ken, who is usually Ryu's friend. In this game, Ken has turned into a cyborg after becoming a scientist and giving himself a cybernetic implant.
The game's storyline is chaotic, that's common in every sci-fi theme like interplanetary invasions. Unfortunately this game is considered very boring and not canon.
5. Bianka’s Real Name is Jimmy
In the early Street Fighter games, only one fighter does not appear to be in human form. He is Blanka, a green monster from Brazil. His terrible roar, giant clawed hands, and ability to stun his opponents made most gamers think that Blanka was not the same species as other fighters.
However, if you finish the game as Blanka, you will learn a surprising truth. Blanka is actually a human. Blanka was separated from his mother in a plane crash, which is why Blanka grew up wild in the Brazilian Amazon jungle.
The reason for his green skin was due to being hit by an electric eel after his accident. Somehow that also explains Blanka's electrical abilities and the ending in the SFII game unites Blanka with his mother again, who says that his real name is Jimmy.

6. The First Game Features Only 2 Playable Characters
The first Street Fighter game only has two playable characters, Ryu and Ken. The last boss of this game is Sagat. The three of them will continue to be the face of this franchise. Apart from the three of them, the other characters from the first game didn't appear again in the second game.
However, CAPCOM, which always wants to make its fans nostalgic, has begun to bring up other characters from the first game. The Sagat's student, Adon, has reappeared in the franchise since Street Fighter Alpha.
Birdie's race was changed, but he appears again in Alpha. Eagle and his Eskrima wand are back in Capcom vs. SNK 2 (also in Alpha 3). The old fighter named Gen becomes playable again in the Alpha series. Even so, the icons of this franchise are still Ryu and Ken, the two playable characters in the first game.
7. Dhalsim was Inspired by A Character from Master of the Flying Guillotine
Dhalsim, the fire-breathing yogi from the Street Fighter franchise, has moves that are very different from other fighters. This has to do with the fact that Dhalsim is able to stretch his arms and legs long. Dhalsim is inspired by the sequel to the film One Armed Boxer which was released in 1976.
Titled Master of the Flying Guillotine, the film's story is set in the middle of a fighting tournament featuring fighters from all over the world with their respective local martial arts skills. One of the fighters who inspired Dhalsim's character is a yogi from India who can fight by extending his arms.
8. Street Fighter II is the First Fighting Game to Present a Wide Selection of Characters
In the first game, you can only play from the perspective of the default character (Ryu) or play with friends as the second default character (Ken). Both characters have the same moves and techniques.
With the release of Street Fighter II, players can choose from a variety of characters to play with. This is the first fighting game in history to offer a wide selection of characters with different background stories, skill stats, moves, and techniques.
9. Street Fighter II is The First Game with Playable Female Fighter
Chun-Li is the first female character in the Street Fighter canon and the first playable female character in a fighting game. That's why Chun-Li became very popular in pop culture and is also an icon for tough female characters.
10. The Live-Action Film Reveal The Characters’ Full Name
In the Street Fighter live-action film in 1994, a number of the characters received first or last names. For example, Guile became William F. Guile, Sagat became Viktor Sagat, Ryu became Ryu Hoshi, E. Honda became Edmund Honda, and Chun-Li took the last name Zang.
However, in the live-action film, it is said that Blanka's real name is Carlos Blanka, and is often called Charlie by Guile. Maybe because the character represents 2 characters from the game, namely Charlie as Guile's closest friend and Blanka when turning into a monster.
