Tobey Maguire is one of the most famous Hollywood actors and his face has been made into a lot of memes. Even though he is 46 years old now, Tobey Maguire is still considered a young character, and most fans still associate him with his role as Spider-Man. Peter Parker is Tobey's most famous role on the big screen, and arguably defined his career so far. His dance in Spider-Man 3 is something that made Tobey more famous and will always be remembered by many people.
Starting from a rumor that Spider-Man No Way Home could feature a multiverse, many Marvel fans wanted Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to reprise their roles. When it really happened, Tobey became more and more famous even though he was not as young as he used to be. Are you curious about the iconic Tobey Maguire from Spider-Man? Let's look at 10 facts about the Peter Parker actor!
1. Tobey Maguire Beats Jude Law and Freddie Prinze Jr. for the Spider-Man Role
In 2000, Entertainment Weekly reported that well-known actor Jude Law was a big fan of Spider-Man. Jude Law is one of Tobey Maguire's main contenders for the role of Peter Parker along with popular actor Freddie Prinze Jr.
In one of Spider-Man's behind-the-scenes, Tobey Maguire said he looked more like an arthouse actor at the time of his audition than someone fit to play a superhero. Tobey said Sony was hesitant to hire him until Sam Raimi nominated him for the Peter Parker role.
"They said, 'Well, we liked him as an actor. We weren't sure if he was the right fit for this role,'" Tobey said about Sony in the behind-the-scenes.
"Sam Raimi really put in the effort for me and it was a tough thing. I had to struggle with him, but he was so supportive and excited to have me in the film," Tobey said. He also added, "I did two screen tests for the film and then I was cast in it. It was a good thing because I really felt like a package with Sam."
2. Joe Manganiello was Offered $100 to Actually Punch Him
Joe Manganiello plays Flash Thompson who tries to fight Peter Parker in the school hallway. "There was a crew that came up to me and said, 'Listen, I'll give you $100 if you actually hit him in the face by accident,'" Manganiello said in a 2013 interview with Pete Holmes. Manganiello also refused an offer that could hurt his co-star.
3. Tobey Maguire was Fired from Spider-Man 2
Tobey Maguire was fired from Spider-Man 2. Fortunately, it didn't happen permanently. The reason is that Tobey is already known as Peter Parker. The dismissal had occurred because the state of the project became so bad that Sony began considering a replacement actor. Jake Gyllenhaal was among the names of his potential successors.
Why was Tobey fired for such a short time? A report at the time claimed it was Maguire's back injury and his feud with producer Laura Ziskin that earned more money than Tobey.
Tobey himself stated that a serious spinal cord injury almost cost him his Spider-Man role. Behind the scenes, Raimi calls Tobey and tells him that he probably won't be working with him anymore because he needs a healthy Spider-Man actor to star in his film.
Fortunately this problem did not continue and Tobey returned to play Peter Parker. Imagine if Jake Gyllenhaal played Spidey in Spider-Man 2? Maybe we will see a different Mysterio in Far From Home.
4. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst had Dated
Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst had been dating for a short time. Their breakup initially worried director Sam Raimi. "I actually had some concerns about it," Raimi told The Sydney Morning-Herald in 2007 following the release of Spider-Man 3.
"I think they started dating, in the middle of the first film… although I didn't know it at the time," Raimi said. He added, "They ended up breaking up before the second film. I was worried they wouldn't get the same chemistry again."
5. A Stunt Double for Peter Parker’s First Shirtless Scene
The scene where Peter Parker first gets his spider powers and his body turns muscular turns out to be not Tobey Maguire's real body. Tobey's head was edited in someone else's body for the scene. "I want to clarify, this is not my body, I'm a skinny guy," Tobey said in behind-the-scenes with J.K. Simmons.
When Peter Parker wakes up and looks in the mirror at his new physical appearance, it is Tobey's real body. Tobey also said that he subsequently did five months of fitness training (six days a week, four hours a day) with the help of a nutritionist and trainer to get in shape.
6. The Spider Bite Scene is Also Done with Stunt Double
Special effects designer for Spider-Man, John Dykstra, said that the hand of the person used for the scene where Peter Parker was bitten by a spider was not Tobey Maguire's hand. Tobey also revealed in the behind-the-scenes comments of the Spider-Man film, "By the way, that's not my hand. That's not my thumb either."

7. It Took 30 Minutes to Take Off the Costume for a Toilet Break
Needing to go to the toilet or have a drink wasn't the most enjoyable part of the first Spidey suit.
"I couldn't put on and take off my own costume and my lenses would be a little cloudy so my vision would be limited," Tobey Maguire said in behind-the-scenes comments on the Spider-Man film. "If I have to use the restroom or drink water, it's a 30 minute process and the costume's zipper can break all the time," Tobey continued.
8. Tobey Admits to Never Reading Spider-Man Comics and Didn’t Want To
On the Late Night Show, Tobey Maguire admitted that he never and would not read Spider-Man comic books even though he starred in the film. Maybe this is understandable because some people do not like reading comics and that is a natural thing. Even so, Tobey’s Peter Parker is quite similar to the comic character, because of his understanding of the film script and his acting skill.
9. The Peter-MJ-Harry Love Triangle is Real
Peter Parker and Harry Osborn fight over MJ in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. However, many people may not know that the love triangles also happen in real life! Tobey Maguire and James Franco loved Kirsten Dunst during the filming of Spider-Man. Finally, Tobey won this love competition by dating Kirsten.
However, James' interest in Kirsten worsened his friendship with Tobey for some time. “Tobey and Kirsten became lovers at the time. I had a crush on Kirsten too," James Franco said in a Playboy interview in 2013. He added, "And I think I was pissed about that too... Tobey was mad at me for a while." Luckily, Tobey and James clear things up in the second Spider-Man film.
10. Tobey was Considered to Play Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean
The popular pirate-themed film, Pirates of the Caribbean, initially considered Tobey Maguire to play Will Turner. However, in the end Tobey never landed the role since Will Turner's character was apparently set up for actor Orlando Bloom. The thought of Tobey Maguire speaking a British accent if he were to actually be Will Turner might sound a bit odd.
