Mayumi Tanaka is the voice actress behind the distinct, shrill voice of Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece, who has accompanied us from the beginning of the story until now. 1. Working as a Voice Actress for 43 Years
Mayumi Tanaka was born on January 15, 1955, meaning that she is now 66 years old. Her career as a voice actress began when she voiced Ryoko Takagi in the Gekiso! Ruben Kaiser, which aired in 1978. Sometime later, Mayumi-san cast as a voice actress for Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece until now.
Besides Luffy, she has also voiced several famous anime characters such as Koenma from Yu Yu Hakusho and Krilin from the Dragon Ball series. At her current age, Mayumi still looks very healthy and energic to work as a voice actress.
2. Has Won Several Awards
Mayumi has won so many awards as a voice actress by winning several awards. In 1986, she won the 9th Anime Grand Prix for Voice Actress of the Year category. In 2011, Mayumi-san won the 5th Seiyuu Awards in the Kazue Takahashi Memorial Awards category. Whereas in 2013, she won the 7th Seiyuu Awards in the Kids Family Award category.
3. Starring in More than 100 Anime
In her 43 years of career as a voice actress, Mayumi-san has recorded for voicing various characters from 104 different anime to date. It’s no wonder that people call her a legendary voice actress. In some anime, she voiced more than one character. For example, in Dragon Ball Z, she also voiced Yajirobe and Uranai Baba besides Krillin.
In addition to the anime series, Mayumi-san also starring in 57 anime feature films. Mayumi-san’s first gig was Tsushima Maru: Sayonara Okinawa, which aired in 1982, while the last (and the most recent) movie was One Piece: Stampede, which aired last 2019. She also played in many drama series.
4. Stays Young
Even though she is currently 66 years old, Mayumi-san’s face may look like around 40s. She married Hiroyuki Shibamoto in 1985 and has one child, but they are already divorced. One of the secrets to staying young is probably she often exercises.
Some time ago, when the One Piece anime was taking a break, all Japanese citizens underwent home isolation, including Mayumi-san. While at home, she often exercises like playing juggling and doing light sports. She also always avoids fatty foods to maintain her body.
5. Looking for Her Successor
Because she is no longer young, Mayumi-san is worried that one day she won’t live long enough to see the end of One Piece. She once intended to find a voice actor/actress who would replace her. In a talk show "Bokura no Jidai", Mayumi hoped that when the time comes, fans can accept the new voice performer to replace her as a new Luffy's voice actress.
In the program, Mayumi's son had the opinion that the right person to replace his mother was Masako Nozawa, the voice actress of Son Goku from the Dragon Ball series. In response to that, Mayumi laughed and unsure if someone older than her could replace her. This is because Masako Nozawa is already 84 years old.
