My Dress Up Darling is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Shinichi Fukuda. The manga began serialization on Square Enix's Young Gangan in January 2018, and was compiled into eight volumes in October 2021. The anime adaptation of My Dress Up Darling by Clover Works premiered in January 2022.

My Dress Up Darling anime tells the story of Wakana Gojo, a first year high school student who dreams of becoming a traditional Japanese doll craftsman. One day during his first semester, his popular classmate named Marin Kitagawa sees him making doll costumes in the school's tailoring room.

Marin, who had been wanting to cosplay for a long time and observed Wakana's skill in sewing, asked her to make a character costume from a video game that she admired. Despite the fact that Wakana has no experience making costumes for a human, he is inspired by Marin's persistence and agrees to make a cosplay costume for her.

1. Wakana Gojo

The main protagonist of My Dress Up Darling is a high school freshman. Due to being an orphan, he was raised by his grandfather, a traditional Japanese doll craftsman. His grandfather also inspired him to become kashira-shi, a craftsman who makes the head of the traditional Japanese Hina doll.

Wakana has a large physique and is over 180 cm tall, but he is quite introverted due to the bitter memories of being criticized by his childhood friend. His childhood friend thought boys shouldn't play with dolls like girls. Likewise, he hid his hobby of making dolls and had no close friends until he finally met Marin.

2. Marin Kitagawa

Marin is a popular waifu for many people in 2022 thanks to My Dress Up Darling. She is a girl with a gyaru-style appearance, who has an extroverted personality and studies in the same class as Wakana. She is quite energetic and proactive but has an awkward nature too. Marin wasn't very skilled at handiwork. She is an otaku who enjoys various aspects of pop culture, from anime to video games. Wakana has a secret crush on Marin.

3. Sajuna Inui

My Dress Up Darling anime has a cosplay theme, therefore cosplayers such as Sajuna Inui are also presented. She is a cosplayer who has the nickname "Juju". She is a second year high school student attending an all-girls school. However, her physique doesn't match her age, which is why Wakana and Marin initially believed Sajuna to be a middle school student.

However, like Marin, Sajuna is outspoken and proactive and will go out of her way to pursue her goals. Sajuna is quite protective of Shinju even though she wants Shinju to be more open to herself as well as to others.

4. Shinju Inui

The next My Dress Up Darling anime character is Shinju Inui. Shinju is Sajuna's younger sister who is shy and quiet. Shinju is a middle school student. But compared to her older sister's petite figure, she was so tall that she could almost fit into Wakana's uniform.

Shinju is 178 cm tall and has a curvaceous body, which is why she is sometimes mistaken for an adult. Shinju is close to her older sister and has great respect for her. When Sajuna cosplays, Shinju takes on the role of a photographer, using a camera borrowed from their father.

She is also adept at using computers, processing and uploading the images she takes. Nevertheless, she secretly wanted to cosplay as well but was afraid of failing to reach the level of her sister's dazzling appearance.

5. Chitose Amano

The cosplay theme is not complete without the element of crossdressing, therefore My Dress Up Darling anime introduced this crossplayer. Chitose Amano is a male cosplayer who specializes in crossdressing and playing female characters. His cosplayer alias is "Himeno Amane".

He is often bullied because of his feminime appearance. His girlfriend also finds out about Chitose's cosplay crossdressing hobby and throws away all of his costumes. Even so, he can cosplay as a female character so convincingly that many people don't know that he is actually a man.

6. Kaoru Gojo

Kaoru Gojo is Wakana Gojo's grandfather, who inspired Wakana to follow in his footsteps in making traditional Japanese dolls. He is very supportive of his grandson in whatever he does.

When Kaoru saw the underwear his grandson had bought, he initially thought Wakana was buying it for himself. It was only after Kaoru met Marin that Kaoru found out that the underwear was actually for Marin.
