Ian Malcolm is a very iconic character from Jurassic Park. When it was first announced that Jeff Goldblum would reprise his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm the dinosaur expert in Jurassic World 2, fans around the world immediately rejoiced. Even though Dr. Sam Neill's Alan Grant may be the main protagonist of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park, but it is Malcolm and Goldblum who represent the heart and soul of the Jurassic Park franchise.

Goldblum shouldn't be the main attraction in Jurassic Park, but his performance as the main protagonist in Jurassic Park: The Lost World has made him an icon of this hugely popular film franchise. Intrigued by the character of Ian Malcolm who is iconic in the Jurassic Park films? Let's follow the discussion below!

1. Awalnya Jim Carrey Sempat Dipertimbangkan Untuk Memerankan Malcolm

A number of big-name actors have been tested for the role of Dr. Ian Malcolm includes Michael Keaton, Bruce Campbell, Johnny Depp, Ted Danson, Steve Guttenberg, and Michael J. Fox.

Cameron Thor also auditioned for the role before landing a much smaller but still significant role, playing Lewis Dodgson, the head of research at rival In-Gen company Biosyn, who meets Dennis Nedry in Costa Rica early in the film.

Only one other actor came close to being ahead of Goldblum for the role of Malcolm. Jim Carrey was considered suitable to play an eccentric character in the Jurassic Park film like Ian Malcolm.

"I immediately thought of Jeff Goldblum," Casting Director Janet Hirshenson told Entertainment Weekly. "Jim Carrey has stepped in and he's been great too, but I think we all fell in love pretty quickly with Jeff."

2. The Hurricane Helped the Romance of Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern

With one day remaining in the process of shooting the film project Jurassic Park, a big storm hit. On September 11, 1992, there was Hurricane Iniki, the most powerful hurricane in Hawaii's history.

Spielberg and 130 cast and crew members, were on the island of Kaua'I at the time and were forced to take refuge inside their hotel without food or clean water. In an interview with Movieline, Goldblum's co-star Laura Dern recalled how the experience helped bring the cast and crew together.

"The storm was so scary. We didn't know what was going to happen. The next morning, Steven, Jeff Goldblum and I walked through the wreckage and we really felt bonded. So maybe that kind of experience creates a softer and more open relationship with Steven," he said.

Goldblum and Dern enjoyed a romantic relationship two years after the film Jurassic Park and they got engaged, but unfortunately they broke up and their relationship ended.

3. Malcolm Died at the End of Jurassic Park Novel

Michael Crichton's novel differs from the film in a number of ways, most notably the fact that Ian Malcolm's character, apparently dies at the end of the story.

After sustaining a serious injury following his encounter with a Tyrannosaurus Rex, which grabbed him by the jaws and shook him, Malcolm spends the second half of the book's story in a stupor, sometimes half-conscious Malcolm raving about science and philosophy.

His condition continued to deteriorate to the point where it was hinted that he did not survive. However, by the time Crichton had time to write his sequel, Malcolm returned, describing his earlier statements that he was "in near-death" and that he was only "slightly dead" after his heart stopped for a few seconds.

Given that Crichton wrote the book after the release of the first Jurassic Park film, but in Jurassic Park The Lost World Ian Malcom lives on as the unforgettable main protagonist.

4. Dinosaur Watcher in Jurassic Park Movie Inspires Dr. Malcolm’s Popular Words

Phil Tippett credits him as the "Dinosaur Watcher" character in the first Jurassic Park film, famous for his unforgettable meme, and criticized him for failing to control the park's dinosaurs. His position was even changed to "Dinosaur Consultant" in Jurassic World as a result.

Although Tippett's work on this film focused on ensuring the movements made by the CG animators during the film were as realistic as possible, he is also credited with being the inspiration for one of Dr. The most memorable Ian Malcolm.

According to Mental Floss, upon seeing one of the first CGI tests of dinosaurs in action with Spielberg, Tippett can be heard commenting "I thought I was extinct."

The director decided to incorporate those comments into the dialogue between Sam Neill's Alan Grant and Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm after they first saw the dinosaurs. "I think we lost our jobs," Grant said. "Don't you mean extinct?" Malcolm replied.

5. Spielberg Intentionally Dressed Malcolm in Black

Although Spielberg would use color contrast to a more dramatic effect in Schindler List, he was not afraid to adopt a similar thematic approach in his blockbusters such as Jurassic Park.

The most notable of these concerns the dress of Dr. Ian Malcolm and the now legendary black shirt. Spielberg dressed Jeff Goldblum in all black for the film and even repeated the trick for Jurassic Park: The Lost World, with the character being restricted to wearing either black or gray clothing.

While the idea was partly inspired by Goldblum's character Martin Brundle from The Fly, who liked color because it meant he didn't have to think about what color to wear, Spielberg wanted to create a contrast between Malcolm and Richard Attenborough's John Hammond. Hammond's character often wears white clothes.

The two clash throughout the film with a white-clad Hammond who strongly believes in the success of Jurassic Park against the thought of Malcolm, who foreshadows doom for being dressed in black.

6. Goldblum Changed One Scene To Make Malcolm More Heroic

In the shooting script for the film Jurassic Park, the scene where the T-Rex runs away and attacks the car containing Tim and Lex is played differently. Much like Martin Ferrero's Donald Gennaro, Ian Malcolm should have jumped out of his car and ran for his own safety and took cover in a nearby toilet facility.

This scene is actually featured in the novel too, with Dr. Malcolm trying to escape faster than helping Dr. Grant and the kids are trapped.

However, when it came time to film the scene, Jeff Goldblum had other ideas. He suggests they make his escape for cover even more heroic by asking for a scene of Malcolm also holding a flare.

That way, the character can be shown doing something heroic, distracting T-Rex while Grant saves the kids right away. It's the small touches that make a huge difference to the audience's perception of Malcolm's character.

7. Many are Confused Why Malcolm Didn't Appear in Jurassic Park III

There are conflicting stories surrounding Jeff Goldblum's absence from Jurassic Park III. IGN previously reported that what they described as "reliable sources" had revealed that the actor was actually being approached about returning for a role in the third film.

In fact, there have been suggestions in the years since Goldblum was ready to return as Malcolm in the film before a leg injury forced him to quit the project, prior to the start of production on Jurassic Park III.

8. Malcolm's Name is Still Mentioned in Jurassic Park III

Just because Ian Malcolm's character failed to appear in Jurassic Park III, doesn't mean he didn't appear in the film.

In one scene where Sam Neill's Alan Grant meets Eric Kirby, a boy sent for rescue after he's stranded on an island home to dinosaurs, they start talking about books, namely some of Ian Malcolm's recent publications.
