Tomodachi Game is an anime adaptation based on the manga by Mikoto Yamaguchi and Yuuki Satou. Published in 2013, Tomodachi Game is a psychological thriller, much like Mikoto Yamaguchi's manga Dead Tube, which was released a year after the Tomodachi Game manga.
The Tomodachi Game anime series premiered on April 6, 2022, and has a relatively fast-paced plot that instantly throws viewers into the flow of mind games. Curious about the anime whose story is similar to the Korean series Squid Game? Let's follow the discussion of Tomodachi Game in Dunia Games’ Anime of The Week column!
Anime That Tells About Friendships That Can Be Interrupted By Money Problems
The Tomodachi Game anime tells the story of Katagiri Yuichi, a second-year high school student whose family is financially unstable. Despite this, Yuichi is described as a relatively intelligent and easy-going young man who is very loyal to his small group of friends. This is why Yuichi took a side job to save 70,000 yen so he could join his friends on a school trip the following month.
From the beginning, the series introduces Yuichi's group of friends, namely Makoto Shibe, the class president whose family is quite wealthy; Shiho Sawaragi, the class vice president, who is known to be thorough and reliable; Tenji Mikasa, who is very intelligent; and Yutori Kokorogi, a cute girl who has been a victim of bullying in the past.
After introducing the characters, Sawaragi and Shibe announced to their classmates that 2 million yen had been lost and apologized, considering that they were the ones responsible for raising funds for the school trip. Both men claim they don't know how the money got lost or who stole it, but they are blamed anyway, considering it's their responsibility to keep it safe.
Dangerous Game To Solve Financial Problems
Sawaragi and Shibe begged the students in their class for the thief to come forward and confess, but no one did. Several days passed and Yuichi received a letter from Sawaragi, ordering him to meet him at the school gates that evening at 11 pm.
Concerned, Yuichi rushed to meet him, but instead ran into his entire group of friends at the meeting point after they also received the same letter. It turned out that at that time it was revealed that Sawaragi was not the one who sent the letter with his name to invite his friends. Suddenly all of them are mysteriously made unconscious and kidnapped. When they all woke up, they realized that they were all in a white room.
Suddenly, Manabu-kun appears, a character from a dark anime series whose role is to steal things from children. Manabu explains to Yuichi and his friends that someone from his group already owes him 20 million yen and the only way to pay off this debt is to play a series of games together.

Play to Reveal Who Betrayed Yuichi and His Group
They were all reluctant to play until Manabu told them that if they didn't participate in the game, each member of the group would have a debt of 20 million yen to pay off.
This is a good time to reveal to the group who has betrayed the group by stealing 2 million yen from the school trip fund for the entrance fee to the dangerous game, and that it is also he who has this debt. However, the culprit remains a mystery. While playing, Yuichi had to determine which one of his friends had betrayed him.
The first game is called Kokkuri-san. The participants had to place their finger on the large coin in the center of the 'board' and push the coin towards the answer they thought was correct. If everyone gets the right answer, they continue the game. However, if only one person opposes, the council will elect a minority. Whoever successfully completes the game will clear their respective debts.
The first three participants take turns playing. Even though they were asking very easy questions, it seemed that someone was sabotaging the other players by choosing minority answers because they would end up being wrong.
Since this first game, it implies that all of Yuichi's friends are lying to save themselves, much to Yuichi's dismay. His friends also plan to push all their debts to Kokorogi, who gets the last turn in the game.
Since the beginning of the episode, the tension shown in this anime series is very interesting to watch. It's like watching the Korean series Squid Game but in the anime version, because both involve dangerous games to pay off debts and also various betrayals in it.
