The staff of Shenmue the Animation adaptation of Yu Suzuki's SEGA Shenmue, revealed the Japanese voice actors and artists performing the ending theme song for the anime on Thursday, February 3, 2022. The newly announced Shenmue the Animation cast includes Haruka Terui as Shenhua, Haruka Fushimi as Nozomi Harusaki, and Ryuichi Kijima as Gui Zhang Chen. 

Rock band Narudora will perform the anime's ending theme song "Sympathy."The anime will premiere on February 6, 2022 at Crunchyroll and Toonami Adult Swim. Toonami will stream the anime in North America with an English dub. Crunchyroll will stream Shenmue the Animation with English subtitles worldwide outside of Japan and China.

This anime is set in 1986, in Yokosuka, Japan. Tells about Ryo Hazuki who since childhood has been trained to master the Hazuki family's Jujitsu martial arts under the guidance of his father at the Hazuki Dojo.

However, one day a mysterious man named Lan Di came to the Dojo to kill his father and retrieve the precious "sacred mirror" that his father protected. Ryo is determined to find out the truth behind his father's murder involving a mafia cartel and a mysterious organization. He also traveled from Yokosuka to Hong Kong in pursuit of Lan Di.

Chikara Sakurai (One Punch Man season 2, Magimoji Rurumo, Lost Song) is directing Shenmue the Animation at the Telecom Animation Film studio. Sola Entertainment is credited for its production management. Game series director Shenmue Yu Suzuki is executive producer for the anime project.

Kensuke Ishikawa (Tower of God, Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid) is the chief animation director. Kento Shimoyama (Gintama, Valkyria Chronicles, The Devil is a Part-Timer!) is writing the script, and Udaka is in charge of the original character designs. Kashitaro Ito will perform the anime's opening theme song "Undead-Noid."

SEGA released the first Shenmue game on the SEGA Dreamcast console in Japan in 1999, and in North America in 2000. SEGA also released Shenmue II on the Dreamcast in Japan in 2000, and in North America in 2001. Shenmue II was also released to Xbox in 2002. The game series was originally planned as a trilogy.

SEGA released the Shenmue I & II bundle in North America and Europe for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in August 2018. Shenmue III was released for PlayStation 4 and PC in November 2019 after several delays.
