1. He's Gentle When Dealing With Women
Mei Chang could quickly become attracted to Alphonse Elric, and while this one-sided relationship meant nothing, it could be said that Alphonse was kinder to women and girls than Edward was to women.
Not that Edward was a complete jerk to women and children, but Alphonse was more intelligent and gentle in conversation, and he got along with them better overall. Meanwhile, in the bonus comic, Alphonse desperately wants a girlfriend.
2. The Character is Inspired by a Novel from Italy
Alphonse Elric’s soul is bound to a giant suit of armor. More than a few characters of the Fullmetal Alchemist series including the villains were surprised to find that there was no one in the armor. But this story has been told before in a novel from Italy.
It is possible that the mangaka Hiromu Arakawa got his inspiration from the story by Italo Calvino entitled The Nonexistent Knight, where it is told that a knight is just an empty suit of armor who goes on an adventure to uphold the chivalric code. Fortunately, he was a good man, and not a monster at heart.
3. He Underestimated Edward's Mistakes

This popped into Alphonse's head from the start, when Al, incited by Barry the Chopper, accused Ed of creating him as his clone brother. Winry, tearing up, berates Al and reminds him that Edward has always suffered under the weight of guilt. So, Al finally makes up with Ed, and the problem is solved.
