Benedict Wong has been in the Hollywood film industry for almost 3 decades. He has appeared in many films and TV series which many people are not very aware of. With the many skills he has, he can be called a very influential supporting character in many ways.

He has often proved to the world that it is not necessary to play a leading role to attract the attention of the audience. Because he is known to often play supporting characters who are at the right time to do the things a story requires.

Despite being in the film industry for many years, he has also managed to keep his private life hidden from the public. Here are some interesting facts about Benedict Wong and his professional career that will make you fall in love with him even more.

1. He was Born and Raised in England

Benedict Wong's parents are immigrants from Hong Kong. Wong was born and raised in England and what you can imagine in his life is the many cultural differences he went through. He was taught Chinese culture from his parents, but he was also exposed to many influences from the world outside his home, so it is easy to think that he received a deep education throughout his life in the field of cultural diversity.

2. His Character Almost Failed to Make Doctor Strange’s Final Cut

Even before the first trailer video aired, Marvel fans had doubts about being able to see Doctor Strange on the big screen. The superhero is liked by many people, but it is full of Asian stereotypes, especially in the character of Wong, who will be played by Benedict Wong. In an interview, director Scott Derrickson mentioned that he almost didn't include the character of Wong in the film because of the Asian stigma behind it.

I was very excited about the casting of Tilda [Swinton], but I was also very aware that by doing so I was erasing the potential of a significant Asian role. I would have left Wong out of the film at first; he is the butler and sidekick of the Asian race, what should I do with it? But once the decision was made to cast Tilda, we brought Wong back because, unlike The Ancient One, he could be completely subverted as a character and reworked into something that doesn't fall under any comic stereotype."

And luckily, it looks like he kept his word. Instead of just being a sidekick, Wong seems to have a bigger role. Instead of taking part in martial arts, he became a sorcerer, helping teach Strange the concepts of magic. In terms of representation, this is a step in the right direction. Not only does Hollywood need more Asian-American actors in the film industry, it needs them to take on a wider variety of roles than just playing martial arts experts.

3. He Doesn't Like To Be Labeled Because He Wants To Be Himself

One thing that often happens in Hollywood is that some of the actors who are in it are too easy to be labeled by the public which might really define who a person is. For example, Johnny Depp labeled as free-spirited or Dwayne Johnson labeled as macho. Benedict Wong didn't want to be known with that kind of labeling in Hollywood.

He doesn't care what he does in his career, because he just wants to be himself. Maybe that's why Benedict Wong became the character of Wong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films because with the similarity of the name he seemed to be himself too.

4. Wong is Voiced by George Takei in the Spiderman Animated Series

When the MCU cast for The Ancient One was announced, many Marvel fans were furious at first. Instead of the stereotypical wise Asian male, the film's producers chose Tilda Swinton in the role. While it's good that The Ancient One was a woman, a lot of people got angry that the MCU studio didn't pick someone of Asian ancestry. Actor of Japanese descent named George Takei, firmly expressed his thoughts on his Facebook page.

He said, “So let me get this straight. You chose a white actress so as not to hurt sales ... in Asia? This backpedaling is almost as horrific as the casting. Marvel must think we're all idiots."

Thanks to the opinion of George Takei, who is a senior actor in Hollywood, the MCU finally chose a man of Asian descent to play the character of Wong. And Benedict Wong is the one.

It turns out that George Takei himself is a little more familiar with Marvel than we thought. In the popular Spider-Man animated series of the 1990s, George Takei voiced Wong in the character's only appearance. While looking for Mary Jane, Peter Parker saves Wong from a group of ninjas. It turned out that the ninjas had been brainwashed under the influence of Baron Mordo.

Parker also asks Wong and Doctor Strange for help to fight Baron Mordo. Wong can actually take part in some of the action with two awesome looking short swords, and also displays some pretty genius wit. Even though it's only for one episode, the Marvel animated series shows us all the fighting abilities of Wong's capable character.

5. He is a Huge Bruce Lee Fan

Benedict Wong really loved Enter the Dragon, many people think it is one of the best Bruce Lee films ever made. The film is also the most widely referenced for various works in other pop culture. It seems that Wong is someone who draws a lot of inspiration from Bruce Lee as well.

6. He was Cast as Kubilai Khan dalam Serial Netflix

Benedict Wong played Kublai Khan in the Netflix series Marco Polo in 2014. While filming his role as Kublai Khan in Kazakhstan, he said that he and his film crew had to drive for nearly five hours every day to their shooting locations outside the city, where roads the only thing available was a passage between the mountains that they had to go through.

Recalling Kublai Khan's shoot in Kazakhstan, he said that the location would be in the mountains where only the sound of horses could be heard. Wong liked that too, because he thought it was something of a beautiful silence.
