CAPCOM has popularized Chun Li, the female fighter who rose to fame since her debut in Street Fighter II. She is from China, and she enters a martial arts tournament to find and defeat M. Bison, the dictator responsible for her father's death.

Since then, it didn't take long for the first playable female character in this fighting game to become one of the most popular characters in pop culture. Her speed makes her one of the best characters to use, and Chun Li’s lightning moves can be deadly if struck against an opponent.

She is not a damsel in distress waiting to be saved, unlike most of the female characters in other games such as Princess Peach, Zelda, or Olive, which these characters are created after Street Fighter II to depict strong female characters too.

Chun Li was a force to be reckoned with, she never let anyone or anything get in the way of her mission. Do you want to learn more about this powerful female character? Let's look at the 10 facts about Chun Li!

1. Her Full Name Revealed in the Street Fighter Live-Action Movie

The Chun Li that appeared in the 1994 live-action Street Fighter is made to look like her game counterpart. Her ambition is to take revenge on M. Bison who killed her father. The difference is that she was a journalist not a policewoman. Chun Li teams up with E. Honda and Balrog, who is also a war reporter, to approach M. Bison.

Even though it's not canon, this film reveals the character’s full name as Chun Li Zang. Unfortunately the last name Zang is only in the film, played by the famous actress Ming Na Wen, in the game it is never mentioned if her full name is Zang.

2. Has an Evil Counterpart Named Shadow Lady

The Street Fighter franchise has introduced several evil variants of its characters. The most famous is Evil Ryu, which appears when Ryu is possessed by evil energy and loses his mind. There is also Violent Ken which is an evil version of Ken, which was created from the brainwashing technique of M. Bison.

Marvel vs. Capcom introduced the evil version of Chun Li, known as the Shadow Lady. Shadow Lady who has a darker color palette than her normal version has a variety of unique attacks and abilities. Shadow Lady can fire missiles from her back, make giant drills out of her hands, and create electrical barrier walls. She can also do triple jumps and has her own ultimate move, called Final Mission.

3. Often make Cameos in Other Games

Chun Li seems to be tied with Ryu in their various cameos in several games outside of Street Fighter. She usually appears with Ryu as a representative of the Street Fighter series.

CAPCOM has used Chun Li in many of its games, where she often makes cameos. She appears with Guile in the game Final Fight 2, where she is seen eating a bowl of ramen at the Hong Kong level. She can also be seen in the intro of Mega Man 9, where she becomes a local television news reporter.

To see her practice her attack moves in Super Nintendo's Breath of Fire, if you could just visit the town of Bleak and pay a magician. She also appears in one of the DLC endings of Asura's Wrath, where she is seen capturing Kalrow.

4. She was Initially Designed as a Female Soldier

One of the things associated with the success of Street Fighter II is the variety of characters, all of whom are visually different and have different moves and techniques. The exceptions to this are the characters Ryu and Ken, although they are also made to be more distinct from each other in the later Street Fighter series.

Street Fighter II characters had several different early designs during the game's development. Blanka, for example, initially looked like Tiger Mask, a famous Japanese professional wrestler. This appearance will later be adopted by King from Tekken. Vega was originally going to be a member of the Knights Templar and wield a sword in his fights.

The initial design of Chun Li was a female soldier, which resembles Vasquez from the movie Aliens. However, after undergoing a design change to become a policeman in traditional clothes, the female military-themed fighter appears in this game in the form of Cammy.

5. Nerfed By the Developer

Street Fighter II is often considered the pioneer of the fighting game genre. Although not the first game of this genre, Street Fighter II became one of the games that set the benchmark for this genre, and made other games from similar genres follow suit. The fighting game genre is back in popularity, due to the rise of esports and the ease with which players can find opponents online.

In the competitive esports level, usually fast characters dominate. Characters like Fox McCloud and Sheik from Smash Bros. will usually dominate the game. This is especially true for Chun Li, who has consistently been one of the best competitive characters in Street Fighter since her debut.

In the Street Fighter series, Chun Li has the ability to jump back and forth from her opponent, which can also result in combos. Originally, she was supposed to have this ability in Street Fighter II, although the game's developers omitted this attack, as they felt the great ability was too powerful. As a result, this female fighter is nerfed. After that, her ability was restored in a revamp in the Champion Edition of the game

6. She Falls In Love With Ryu

The massive success of Street Fighter II made it a franchise in various media. Street Fighter has spawned live-action films, anime, comics, toys, clothes, and every merchandise that is often sold out.

One of the most famous adaptations of Street Fighter II is the comic series released by Malibu in 1993. In the comics, Chun Li often trains with Ryu and Ken, before she joins the police force.

In the first issue, Chun Li revealed that she had fallen in love with Ryu. But unfortunately Ryu refused. The third edition which is the last issue of this comic series reveals that the two end happily in a romantic relationship.

7. Has Her Own Game

One of the few Street Fighter characters who has ever starred in his own game is Ken, because he is the protagonist of Street Fighter 2010. This action adventure game from CAPCOM was released for Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

Apart from Ken, Chun Li has also starred in her own game, although it's not a very common game. In Japan, there is a gambling machine called Pachinko. A Pachinko entitled Chun-Li ni makase China, presents this female fighter against various enemies from the Street Fighter series. This game does not seem to be released outside of Japan, because the Pachinko is only popular in Japan.

8. Has Her Own Live-Action Film

The Street Fighter live-action in 1994 earned a reputation as a film that was considered very bad but also of good quality. The film, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, helped create a fanbase for the film, and it was even adapted into another game called Street Fighter: The Movie. Despite its flaws, this film does have some unique moments and a final appearance from the late famous actor Raul Julia who plays M. Bison.

In 2009, another Street Fighter live-action film was released, which is completely unrelated to the 1994 film. The film, entitled Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, focuses on the female fighter from China as the main protagonist.

Unlike its predecessors, this film is very bad. It seems that the film went to great lengths to make all the characters different from the game counterpart, with M. Bison being shown as an Irish gangster with no superpowers. Robin Shou, the actor who plays Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat, also appeared in this game as Gen.

9. Jackie Chan Played Her in City Hunter

In 1993, Jackie Chan starred in the action comedy film City Hunter. This film is well remembered by many people because the scene where Jackie Chan was bounced into the Street Fighter II arcade machine causing him to be electrocuted so he became a character from the CAPCOM game.

When Jackie Chan was electrocuted after being thrown into the arcade machine by his enemy, it causes the character from Street Fighter II to enter Jackie Chan’s mind and his enemy. They turn into Ken who fights against E. Honda and Dhalsim.

Jackie Chan then returns to action while wearing Chun Li’s clothes and was perfect in playing the character. Jackie Chan Li fights Ken using the same attack as in the game and finishes off his enemy with a Flying Bird Kick.

10. She had Captured Kingpin

Chun Li has always been one of CAPCOM's representative characters in the crossover games they release. That means she's worked with some amazing characters, like Rogue from the X-Men in X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Morrigan from Darkstalkers in Project X Zone, and Ling Xiaoyu from Tekken in Project X Zone 2.

In Chun Li’s ending in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, she was seen catching Kingpin, the famous villain from Marvel. It was clear that Kingpin had been defeated by her, and had finally been caught by the formidable policewoman.
