Curious about this villain who turns himself into an Android? Let's learn about Dr Gero!
Anime & Manga | 06 October
Dr. Gero is an antagonist character who becomes Goku's enemy which is quite memorable in the Dragon Ball anime, manga, and games. Dr. Gero, the scientist who released Android 16 to Android 19 as well as Cell into the world of Dragon Ball, is a relatively short-lived villain in the Dragon Ball Z saga. He makes his dramatic appearances after the Freezer arc and the events of Future Trunks' first arrival. It is revealed that Gero himself is an Android, who names himself Android 20.
However, there are more facts about the Gero character or Android 20 than are seen in anime or manga. Although he was quickly killed by an Android of his own creation, he left an interesting legacy in the world of Dragon Ball. Here are 10 things Dragon Ball fans need to know about Dr. Gero. Curious about this villain who turns himself into an Android? Let's learn about Dr Gero!
1. His name is taken from the English Medical Terminology
The characters in Dragon Ball Z are known by their puns, from the names of the Saiyan characters who refer to the names of vegetables such as Kakarot (Carrot), Vegeta, Nappa, Caulifa, Broly, Bardock to alien names. Freezer and his brother named Cooler and also King Cold are named after refrigeration equipment. Various Namek characters are given names inspired by musical instruments such as Piccolo, Dende (Denden Mushi), Neil, Drum, and Tamborin.
The demon humans are given the names of famous spells such as Dabra (Abrakadabra) and also Babidy and Bhu who are inspired by the fairy godmother spell in the Disney cartoon Cinderella, namely Babidy babidy Bhu. The Capsule Corp surname is also taken from the names of underwear such as Bulma (Bloomer), Trunks, and Bura (Bra). Then there are those who take names from Chinese cuisines such as Yamcha and Oolong. The martial arts celebrity who is considered to be the savior of the earth is taken from the name of the devil, namely Mr. Satan and his son, Videl, are taken from the anagram of the word Devil. The name of Dr Gero is not much different from the way of naming it through a play on the words.
"Gero" is usually a sound effect affiliated with the sound of vomiting in Japanese manga, although it is also used to refer to the hoarse sound often made by frogs or toads. Appropriately, the word Gero is also a prefix used in British medical terminology to refer to old age.
2. A Scientist of Red Ribbon Army
One of the facts about Dr. Gero that demands the attention of many people is that he is one of the main scientists in the military organization called the Red Ribbon Army. The Red Ribbon Army unit is often an antagonist group for Goku and his friends in the first Dragon Ball series. Dr. Gero, along with a colleague named Dr. Flappe, are the main scientists for the organization and allow the Red Ribbon Army to carry out many of their devious plans.
If you've only watched the Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super series, you'll have little indication of how important the Red Ribbon Army used to be, and this presumption is because the Red Ribbon Army was actually shown during the first Dragon Ball saga. The Red Ribbon Army is only slightly referenced when Dr. Gero and his Android begin to annoy Goku and company during the Cell Saga.
3. He also appeared in the first Dragon Ball series
Being part of the Red Ribbon Army, Dr Gero did appear in the first Dragon Ball series, though he never had an individual scene. He together with Dr. Frappe created Android 8 and Android 9 which were considered failed products.
Cell Saga is of course a repeat of the plot of the first Dragon Ball plot, but at the beginning of the Dragon Ball series, there is still Dr. Gero who works behind the scenes to fight Goku even when he was still a child.
4. He had a Son Named Gevo
Dr Gero has a son by the name of Gevo, who served under the code name "Gold." Gevo was also part of the Red Ribbon Army and died while working for the organization.
Gero made a model of Android 16 that resembled his son, although he programmed Android 16 to be softer than his other Androids because of the sentimentality that Gero felt. Even though this fact is a small detail for a villain whose existence doesn't last long, this fact adds a level of humanity to Dr Gero's personality.
5. Has a Wife Named Vomi
Gevo's mother is also a member of the Red Ribbon Army and is named Vomi. It is believed she was a human who was later turned into an Android by Dr. Gero. She becomes Android 21, the main antagonist of the game Dragon Ball: FighterZ.
Android 21 will implant itself with genetic material from the Saiyans, Namekians, Frieza races, and Majin creatures, just as Cell had previously done. This makes Android 21 a very powerful creature. Despite the fact that this is an additional story set in a video game, it is worth mentioning that Android 21 was designed by the creator of the Dragon Ball story himself, namely Akira Toriyama.

6. Every Android He Creates Is Inspired by Something or Someone
Dr. Gero's Androids are always modeled after something. Android 8 is made to resemble the Frankenstein monster, while Android 16 is made to resemble Gero's son Gevo.
Android 17 and 18 are made from a pair of teenage criminals, Android 19 is made to resemble the doll Gero invented, Android 21 is Gevo's mother, and of course, Android 20 is Gero himself. That said, inspiration for Android 13, 14, and 15 were never revealed.
7. Android 19 Helped Gero to Become Android 20
When Dr. Gero wants to achieve immortality by turning himself into an Android, he asks Android 19 to help him complete the transformation.
Android 19 proves to be Gero's closest and most loyal companion, and he aids Dr. Gero in his initial attack on Son Goku and company. While Android 19 doesn't make much difference in the next battle, he is Gero's most important companion.
8. He Already Considers Himself Dead As an Android
An interesting detail about Dr. Gero is that he claimed to be dead the first time he met Goku. This is supposedly done to hide his true identity from his enemies, but many people wonder if Gero thinks his Android is actually alive, especially given his penchant for turning humans into Androids as was the case with Android 17, Android 18, and Android 21.
9. He Might Actually Survive Android 17’s Attack
In Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!, it is revealed that Dr. Gero's mind may still survive after the destruction of his body and brain at the hands of Android 17 and Android 18. His Super Computer program in his base has awakened Android 13, Android 14, and Android 15 seems to be under Gero's command.
It is worth mentioning that, in the English dubbed version, this is more implied given that the computer has Gero's voice, while this is not the case in the original Japanese dubbed version.
10. He's Back in the Dragon Ball GT Series
Dr Myuu, the creator of Baby, meets and works with Dr Gero while in Hell in the story of the Dragon Ball GT series. The two teamed up to create a creature called "Hell Fighter 17" a mutant machine that was made to resemble the original Android 17 figure.
They combined Hell Fighter 17 with Android 17 to create Super 17, which they sent back to Earth via a portal. Myuu and Gero also returned to earth, but Gero was once again killed by Android 17.
