Kenja No Mago Facts
1. The Storyline Focuses on Shin
Kenja No Mago tells the story of a young employee who dies due to an accident and is reborn in an isekai or another world filled with magic and demons. As a baby, he was picked up by the patriot hero "Sage" Merlin Wolford and named Shin. He was raised as a grandson and absorbed Merlin's teachings, giving him irresistible power.
However, when Shin turned 15, Merlin realized he had forgotten to teach him common sense. Diseum, the king of Earlshide Kingdom, recommends Shin to study at his Magic Academy, with the agreement not to use Shin in a political war. In the capital, Shin saved two girls named Maria and Sizilien from thugs, and then he would inaugurate a club consisting of Shin, Maria, and Sizilien.
2. This Series is a Light Novel Adapted to Manga and Anime
Originally, Kenja no Mago came from a light novel series from Japan written by Tsuyoshi Yoshioka and illustrated by Seiji Kikuchi. The story began its online serialization in January 2015 on its user-generated novel publishing website Shosetsuka ni Naro. At the start of issue 311, in November 2022, it was announced that the episode would be the last posted episode on Shosetsuka ni Naro. The franchise has been acquired by Enterbrain, who have published seventeen light novel volumes since July 2015 under their Famitsu Bunko imprint.
The Kenja No Mago manga adaptation with illustrations by Shunsuke Ogata began serialization on Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace Up website starting in March 2016. The manga has also been collected in twenty tankobon volumes.
3. The anime series adaptation was worked on by Studio Silver Link
The anime adaptation of the Kenja No Mago series directed by Silver Link has aired from April to June 2019. Originally the anime adaptation of the series was announced in September 2017. The anime, which was later confirmed to air on television, was directed by Masafumi Tamura and the script was written by Tatsuya Takahashi, features animation created by Silver Link with character designs by Yuki Sawairi and music by Kow Otani.
The series aired from April 10 to June 26, 2019 on AT-X, ABC, Tokyo MX, and BS11. i☆Ris is performing the series' opening theme song "Ultimate☆Magic", while Nanami Yoshi is performing the series' ending theme song "Attoteki Vivid Days."
Funimation licensed the series and produced an English dub of the series. You can also watch the anime series legally and for free at Bilibili Bstation.
4. Unlike the Anime Version, the Manga Begins After Shin Reincarnated
Kenja No Mago manga begins with the story of Shin demonstrating his magical powers to hunt animals, much to the surprise and awe of older magic users. Shin briefly recalled his past life as a salaryman during the first chapter of the manga, but he didn't think much of this memory.
However, the anime version begins by providing a deeper look into Shin's past life, prior to his reincarnation. This storyline includes a story showing Shin's actual death, which is being hit by a car while crossing a road, with explicit details before he finally wakes up as an orphaned baby in the next world.
5. Shin's Magic Demonstration Scene Expanded in the Anime Version
In the manga version, Shin demonstrates his magic to Christina, Siegfried, and his fellow mages in the mountains. This demonstration was only a few panels, but it could show how powerful Shin's magic was compared to ordinary magic users.
However, this scene is extended in the anime. In addition, Shin's voiceover in his inner thought form explains the process of casting his magic. In the anime, Shin showcased not only his extraordinary strength, as is often the case with other isekai protagonists, but also demonstrated his deep knowledge and understanding of magic, meaning Shin's intelligence is as great as how powerful he is.

6. Shin's Reaction to Diseum Becoming a King Doesn't Occur in the Manga
In the anime, Shin immediately panics after learning that Uncle Dis is actually Diseum von Earlshield, King of the Earlshield Kingdom. After this, Shin found out that Chris and Sieg were part of the Diseum royal guard, and had kept this secret until now. Considering how long they had known each other, it was surprising that Shin had not realized it sooner.
However, the manga version does not include this scene at all. Instead, the manga jumps right into the scene of Diseum explaining Merlin and Merida's powerful skills in the previous battle, after Diseum formally introduces himself as king to Shin.
7. The Anime Does Not Show Shin Exploring the City After Settling in the Mansion
After Shin, Merlin and Melina settled in the city's mansion, in the manga version Shin took the time to explore the city. These scenes include checking the market for interesting or useful items, and encountering long queues of people waiting to enter the theater to watch a play. However, Shin instead soon met Sicily and Maria by saving them both from an unwanted incident.
This scene also occurs in the anime but stops Shin from exploring the market and finds a long queue of people. Instead, Shin encountered Sicily and Maria being greeted, and Shin immediately stepped in to save the two of them.
8. The Anime Does Not Include the Scene of Shin Returning Home After the First Meeting with Sicily and Maria
In the manga, there is a brief scene where Shin returns to the mansion after the first time he meets Sicily and Maria. Shin received a formal invitation for the academy entrance examination from one of the butlers. As he checked the letter, Shin vowed to give everything he had to give, and also so that he would not tarnish Merlin and Melina's reputation as their grandchildren.
However, this scene is not included in the anime version. Instead, the anime cuts to the day of the entrance exam, showing Shin directly approaching the school. He didn't mention his worry about tarnishing Merlin and Melina's name. Instead, he focused on his wish to see Sicily again after passing the exam. This portrayal made Shin appear more focused on Sicily than his own grandparents at this point.
9. Shin's Speech is Cut in the Anime
During the welcoming ceremony scene in Kenja No Mago's manga version, Shin had to give the entire speech on behalf of the new students, as he was the top student in the entrance exam. His speech went very well despite Shin's social incompetence. He even injects jokes about his lack of common sense into his speech, which amuses both his students and academy staff.
However, this speech is cut shorter in the anime version. Instead, the scene focuses on the reactions of students such as Sicily, Maria, and Kurt to the speech. Kurt was more focused on his jealousy of Shin's talent and achievements than his own.
10. The Second Season is Based on the Fourth to Sixth Light Novel Volume
The first season of the Kenja no Mago anime, with 12 episodes, premiered in Japan in April 2019. Since then, the series has amassed a sizable fan base who are still hoping the anime will get a second season.
The continuation of Kenja no Mago after the first anime season is presented in the light novel version Volume 4.
