The 1995 series Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most famous and beloved anime series to date. This anime presents a controversial theme as well. Curious about the anime that catapulted the name of the character Rei Ayanami into the waifu of all time? Here are some facts you might not know about Neon Genesis Evangelion, a mecha anime with a controversial theme!

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion is One of the Most Important Anime of All Time

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a Japanese animated cartoon (aka anime) that aired on TV stations in Japan from October 1995 to March 1996. Developed by the innovative animation studio Gainax, the anime series has 26 episodes, followed by a feature film in July 1997. Ten years later, in 2007, the four-part "rebuild" film series was released in theaters, with the aim of remaking the story of the anime series.

The premise of the Evangelion anime, which fans usually refer to as Eva, is about the events of 2015 (20 years in the future from the anime's 1995 debut), and the earth has been ravaged by a catastrophic event called Second Impact.

The United Nations works with a special military organization called Nerv, to protect survivors from the next disaster, namely the arrival of some killer creatures from outer space, known as Angels. The Angels were determined to exterminate the remnants of the human race on earth.

Only the manned Nerv robots are strong enough to face and defeat the Angels. This robot is called EVA Unit. There are only four EVAs, and they require a physical and mental connection with the pilot driving them. The story also follows Shinji Ikari, a gloomy teenager who happens to be the son of Gendo Ikari, the mastermind behind the EVA Unit software.

Thanks to some fatherly emotional manipulation he does, prompts Shinji to help his father in this task. Shinji travels to Nerv's headquarters in Tokyo-3 city to become an EVA pilot.

A giant robot battle ensues, with increasingly deadly consequences. But the Evangelion series has little in common with the globally acclaimed Transformers or many people's favorite franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam, because they are both animated series about humans and large robots.

Because Evangelion also presents tougher concepts, like for example: What does it mean to fight a battle you don't believe in? When your body becomes a war machine, what is your goal when the war is over? If there is a God, why is God so cruel to the creation they are supposed to love, namely mankind?

All of these questions they raise come together to form one of the most powerful, visually stunning, intellectually philosophical undertones in the history of any media. That's why Evangelion is considered to be one of the most important anime.

2. The Second Impact Sound Effect is created from the Vibration of the Electromagnetic Objects of the Moon and Saturn

In the Second Impact scene in the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series, the sound effects used during the spread of the wings use similar sound effects from the planet Saturn and the dark side of the moon, created by converting the electromagnetic vibrations of the planetary object into a sound effect.

3. Early Evangelion Concepts Featured a Female Main Protagonist, Not a Male Like Shinji

A female protagonist was proposed in the early stages of writing the story of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The first episode of the series is supposed to feature the battle between Angel and Rei, while Shinji will be introduced afterward. However, the final concept shown in this series is very different.

4. Initially There were More Angels

Shinji and Nerv were supposed to fight 28 Angels according to the original script, but due to the production deadline of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the number of Angels was reduced to 17.

5. The True Ending is Different From What is Shown in the Series

The original ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion was supposed to depict the failure of the human instrument project when Angel attacked Nerv from the moon, but a different ending was shown in the series instead.

6. A Real Psychological Term is Used as Technique

The Absolute Terror Field, a barrier used by Angel and EVA to create a defensive shield that declared its absolute territory was taken from a psychological term in the real world. This term is used to describe the mental barriers possessed by autistic people and was discovered by the famous psychologist named Sigmund Freud. His student, William Reich, developed the idea of AT Field at a later date.

7. The Character Names are Taken From World War II Ships

The character names in the Neon Genesis Evangelion series are mostly based on the warships used in World War II. The names were Ayanami, the destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy, Soryu, the aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy, Langley, after the United States Navy ship, and Ikari, the anchor which was part of the warship.

Hiromu Arakawa used this idea in his series, Fullmetal Alchemist.

8. The Voice Actors in the Anime Series Almost Kill Each Other To Get An Authentic Choking Voice

Asuka's voice actor Yuko Miyamura allowed Megumi Ogata to strangle her in the recording room during the scene of Shinji strangling Asuka in End of Evangelion.

Then during the final scene of End Of Evangelion, Megumi strangles her so hard that she can't even say the lines. She says:

There was a time when I actually pushed Yuko Miyamura to the floor to strangle her during the last scene of 'Evangelion' where Shinji strangled Asuka. I couldn't act well in playing that scene. I was so agitated that I choked her too hard, making it impossible to say her lines for a while. Of course, I apologized to her for doing that. I almost killed her."

9. EVA’s Design was Inspired by Japanese Oni

The EVA design in the Neon Genesis Evangelion series is based on the Japanese monster "Oni" which means Devil or Giant. Hideaki Anno the creator said:

There is a monster in Japan called Oni; she has two horns sticking out of her head and Eva's overall image is based on the Oni. I also want to give the impression that under this picture the 'robot monster' is not a real robot, but a giant human.

10. Evangelion is Inspired by Manga Devilman

The Devilman manga had a huge influence on Hideaki Anno, and Neon Genesis Evangelion borrows some of its themes and ideas from Devilman. The scary face, slender body, hunched back and EVA chest plate are based on Devilman.

Also, Hideaki Anno wants to end the series in a similar way to Devilman in End of Evangelion. Both series feature the same dark nature with religious symbolism, mentally disturbed characters, death, and sexual elements in them. That's why a controversial theme was also presented in the Neon Genesis Evangelion series which became a legendary and timeless anime and manga.
