The Red Ribbon Army is an antagonistic organization that has repeatedly become the mortal enemy of Goku and his friends in the anime, manga, and game series Dragon Ball. The military organization also appeared in the film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero which was released in 2022 and became the top 5 highest-grossing anime films in the United States, even surpassing the achievements of the film Dragon Ball Super: Broly. This is not surprising to many considering how easy it is for fans in the United States to access the film and the popularity of the Dragon Ball series in the US is already very dominating compared to other anime titles.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero saw the return of the Red Ribbon Army with Commander Red's successor and Dr. Gero is the leader. Even though the Red Ribbon Army remains an evil organization, the androids created by Red Ribbon this time are much different from the previous ones. Curious about Goku's enemy military organization which was inspired by Nazi Germany? Let's follow the discussion of the following Red Ribbon Army!

1. This Organization Has Changed Its Name Several Times

In the Dragon Ball series, the Red Ribbon Army has changed its name several times due to various events. The first time the Red Ribbon Army changed its name to the Black Ribbon Army was when Staff Officer Black took over the leadership of Commander Red in the Dragon Ball anime story. This paramilitary criminal organization in the Dragon Ball manga and anime is also retold in the Dragon Ball Z series during the Android Saga where the organization's Androids appear as antagonists under the leadership of Dr. Gero.

After their defeat, the Red Ribbon Army continued to operate through their company called Red Pharmaceuticals. In the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero they are back with their newest android model.

Many members of the Red Ribbon also appear in the Dragon Ball GT series, as they have been released from hell. In the game Dragon Ball Online, this organization is back under the name Red Pants Army.

2. Some Members Named By Color

Some of the main figures in the Red Ribbon Army organization have names that come from color names. In some cases, this color name may be the actual name for them, but in some other cases, this color name can be a code name.

Some of the character names in this organization are Commander Red, Staff Officer Black, General Blue, General White, Colonel Silver, Sergeant Major Murasaki (Purple in Japanese), and characters with various other color names. This color naming trend continues even into Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero with the appearance of a character named Magenta, the son of Commander Red.

3. Inspired by Nazi Germany

Most of the organizational designs of the Red Ribbon Army are inspired by military organizations that exist in the real world and consist of people from various nationalities. One of the biggest influences on the Red Ribbon wanting to collect Dragon Balls was Nazi Germany and Hitler and Himmler's obsession with collecting supernatural objects. The General Blue uniform itself is also very similar to the Nazi Germany uniform known as the Brown Shirts.

4. One of the stories is also inspired by the Terminator film

The film called The Terminator actually has a pretty important impact on the creation and concept involving the Red Ribbon Army in the Dragon Ball Z series, as well as the design of Major Metallitron in the Dragon Ball story which is a robot and he looks almost identical to Arnold Schwarzenegger in his role as the Terminator.

The plot about a man who comes from the future to stop the android threat that will bring the world to a terrible timeline is also copied from the Terminator movie with Future Trunks representing Kyle Reese and Android 17, Android 18, and Cell representing T-1000.

5. Android 16 Design Based on Dr. Gero’s Son

The story of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, is quite interesting, as it reveals that Gero has more than one child. However, as some Dragon Ball fans may know, Dr. Gero does have a son named Gevo. Gevo is a soldier in the Red Ribbon Army with the code name "Gold." He is a cruel man and also likes to be rude. This story finally shows the events of his death.

The death clearly had an impact on Gero, so he made Android 16 which was designed based on the figure of Gevo. Perhaps this was a way to resurrect his son from the dead. He purposely programmed Android 16 to be less violent and less aggressive, which is the exact opposite of his son's personality. This was likely done to prevent his son's death, though it certainly didn't work as his death was the trigger for one of the best transformations in the Dragon Ball series.

6. Not all Androids are really Android

Although the term "Android" is used in the Dragon Ball series to refer to all of Gero's character creations that have numbers, the Androids are not all actually Androids. Some of them are cyborgs. For example Android 16 and Android 19 are Android, while Android 17 and Android 18 are actually cyborgs.

This distinction is important because Gero has never managed to create a cyborg that fits all of his desires. The only creations he likes are Android 16 and Android 19, which are true Androids.

7. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is a Parallel of the Cell Saga

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is narrated similarly to the Cell Saga in many ways. This assumption alone is clearly right with how the roles of Piccolo and Gohan appear in the film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Gohan has always been the main protagonist of the Cell Game. In addition, the similarity of the Red Ribbon Army in Cell Saga with the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is with the roles of the characters.

Magenta is the new leader of the Red Ribbon Army, who is also Commander Red's son. He recruited Dr. Hedo, the grandson of Dr. Gero, to make even more androids. He managed to do so and resulted in two iconic androids known as Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. Despite their very different personalities, they both fulfill roles similar to those of Androids 17 and 18. The last similarity between the 2 stories is that of Cell and Cell Max.

8. Android 21 is Based on Dr. Gero’s Wife

Most Dragon Ball fans will know that Android 21 comes from the game Dragon Ball FighterZ. She also appears as a scientist in the game Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Android 21 is a complex and interesting character because she doesn't even know who she really is.

She is an android based on the late wife of Dr. Gero, Vomi, or she's actually Vomi who has turned into an Android, because that's what she believes. Apart from being a powerful Android, she is also a brilliant scientist, perhaps even more so than Gero's. Vomi is briefly mentioned in a flashback scene in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and many fans are looking forward to seeing the Android 21 character become canon in the main series.

9. Android 1 to Android 7 and Android 9 to Android 15 were Destroyed Because It were Considered a Failed Product

There are various reasons why every Android is considered a failed product, but Dr. Gero wanted them to have the right personality to obey every command.

Close to achieving Gero's goal were Android 13, Android 14, and Android 15. However, they were still considered failures and were destroyed. It looks like android 1 through Android 7 is no different from Eighter, also known as Android 8. And while Android 8 isn't destroyed, it's also considered a failure due to his good nature and reluctance to fight. This Android shaped like Frankenstein actually becomes Goku's best friend when trapped in the Red Ribbon headquarters.

10. Android 17 and Android 18 Should Also Be Considered Failed Products

Just like the previous Androids, Android 17 and Android 18 were both seen as failed products by Dr. Gero. This may seem confusing at first because they seem to be near-perfect creations with their unstoppable power, agelessness, and limitless energy.

However, due to their rebellious personality, Gero could not trust them and saw them as a failure. The two of them were the last real humans Gero used in his experiments as he didn't seem to be making any headway in his Android creation.

11. Dr. Gero Is Not The Leader Of The Red Ribbon

Misconceptions of many people about Dr. Gero is that he is actually the leader or mastermind behind the Red Ribbon Army. This confusion seems to be caused by the English version of the voiceover stating that Gero is the leader of the Red Ribbon.

However, in the dubbing of the Japanese version and the original manga, Gero is simply the chief scientist and mastermind behind many of Red Ribbon's technological creations. The true leader is Commander Red, although after his death and the fall of the Red Ribbon Army, Dr. Gero became the new leader.

Well, that's the discussion of 11 facts about the Red Ribbon Army, a military organization that has always been Goku's enemy in the Dragon Ball series.
