Matthew Vaughn's latest film, The King's Man, has been released on Disney+ following its theatrical release. With the theme of espionage and the actions of spies who protected the world in the shadows, this film is quite entertaining by depicting various original historical events for the audience to learn.
For those who have watched The King's Man, you must be familiar with the whole plot. However, a lot of things are going on behind the scenes and definitely not many people know about. Want to know interesting facts about The King's Man? Let's take a look at the 10 facts about the exciting World War I-themed film!
1. The King's Man is Technically a Marvel Film
The Kingsman franchise is adapted from Icon Comics, which is an affiliate of Marvel Comics. This technically makes The King's Man the 6th Marvel-related film to release in 2021.
Matthew Vaughn seems to really like Icon Comics as he has adapted a number of stories from there, including one involving the cast of a Kick-Ass superhero from Marv or Icon Comics, namely Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The actor who appeared in the latest Kingsman film also previously played in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Pietro Maximoff or Quicksilver.
2. The Prequel of Kingsman: The Secret Service dan Kingsman: Golden Circle
The King's Man is not a sequel to the previous film, but a prequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: Golden Circle. So the storyline will tell us how the Kingsman secret service is formed. The story also focuses on the origins of the secret intelligence agency in World War I.
The duo Eggsy and Harry, played by Taron Egerton and Colin Firth, have indeed become the main attraction in the previous Kingsman films. However, because the story that is raised this time is a prequel, the two actors will be absent from this film.
But the audience need not be disappointed because the duet Eggsy and Harry were not involved in the film. Because in this newest prequel there are new characters that are no less cool, namely Orlando Oxford (Ralph Fiennes), Polly Wilkins (Gemma Arterton), Grigori Rasputin (Rhys Ifans), Morton (Matthew Goode), Conrad Oxford (Harris Dickinson) and several other original characters from world history.
3. The Only Film Matthew Vaughn Written Without Jane Goldman
British screenwriter Jane Goldman has co-written with The King's Man director Matthew Vaughn on previous films except the current one. This time Jane Goldman was replaced by Karl Gajdusek.
The absence of Jane Goldman in this film project is very pronounced. Without Jane Goldman's touch in writing the script, The King's Man would have been the only film in the Kingsman franchise to receive poor reviews from film critics. Her replacement, Karl Gajdusek, also does not have a good track record. Karl Gajdusek is best known for one of his latest projects, The Last Days of American Crime, which also received poor reviews.
4. The Film’s Initial Title was Kingsman: The Great Game
According to The Mirror, The King's Man film's first planned title is Kingsman: The Great Game. The term "The Great Game" was historically used to describe the political strife between Russia and England in the 19th century.
Changing the title would definitely be a good idea as the words "The Great Game" might fool some fans into thinking the film has a contest-like plot. After all, not everyone is familiar with the term. The current title works better because it fights head-on with the previous title.
The new title is also very accurate because Orlando, one of the most liked characters in The King's Man, is the Duke of Oxford and one of the people the king of England trusts most. Moreover, he is the founder of the agency Kingsman Secret Service.
5. Several Stars are Considered to Play in This Film
Several big stars could have appeared in The King's Man if the negotiations had gone well. These big stars include Nicolas Cage, Rachel Weisz, and Brad Pitt.
Fans will be surprised to learn that Nicolas Cage will not be able to play as the action star has focused his career on indie projects rather than blockbusters in recent years. But even though the big stars were not involved in this film, there are still many famous celebrities such as Ralph Fiennes, Djimon Hounsou, and Gemma Arterton who enliven the film.

6. Three of the Cast have Appeared in James Bond Movies
Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, and Neil Jackson have appeared in James Bond films. Gemma and Neil appear in Quantum of Solace, while Ralph Fiennes plays Bond's boss named M since Judi Dench's departure from the secret agent 007 franchise.
Actor Ralph Fiennes has been doing many secret agent movies lately. His role as Orlando is not much different from his role as M because both are bosses of an intelligence organization in their respective films. While The King's Man may not be considered one of the best spy movies of all time, it still has a lot in common with the James Bond franchise.
7. Release Date Changed Eight Times
The King's Man is a film whose release date was changed more than six times. The film was originally planned to be released on November 9, 2019, but it was pushed back to February 14, 2020. However, it was pushed back to September 18, 2020, before being rescheduled for February 26, 2021. The release date was later changed to March 12, 2021, August 20, 2021, and the last date is December 22, 2021.
The frequent changes may seem like confusion on the studio's part but most of the causes have to do with the pandemic. With the COVID-19 pandemic proving to be an obstacle that is hard to break, most film studio decisions have tried to overcome it by finding the most suitable date to maximize profits. Some of those delays don't seem to have come to fruition as this spy-themed film hasn't hit the expected profit.
8. Aaron Taylor-Johnson Turned Down a Role in the First Kingsman Film
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who played Lancelot named Lee Unwin in The King's Man, was offered the role of Lee's son, Eggsy, in the franchise's first film, but he declined. Luckily when he was approached again in the third film in the Kingsman franchise, Aaron accepted.
Skepticism tends to be common with actors but seeing how successful something they reject can make them change their minds. Most actors never get the chance to be offered a role similar to the one they've turned down, but luckily for Aaron Taylor-Johnson, he's worked with Vaughn before so there isn't a bad relationship between the two.
9. Cinematographer of this Film Left the Project Early Due to Eternals
The film's first cinematographer, Ben Davis, had to leave production early because he had been hired to work on Eternals. This meant that the final reshoot had to be completed by a different team.
Since both of the previous Kingsman films have received critically acclaimed reviews, some might blame Ben Davis for not focusing his efforts on one project, so he instead sacrificed the two critically acclaimed films The King's Man and Eternals. However, this aspect of cinematography has not been selected for criticism in both projects. In fact, The King's Man has such outstanding visuals that it's worth comparing it to one of Sam Mendes' best First World War films released in 2019, 1917.
10. The King's Man is Bradley Allan's Last Film
Legendary stuntman Bradley James Allan has worked in the best films ranging from several Jackie Chan films to Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The 10 Rings. Unfortunately, The King's Man was his last project.
A stuntman rarely gets the recognition they deserve in Hollywood, but that never stops them from performing at their best. Having worked in over 20 action-packed films, there is no doubt that Allan is excellent at his job.
