In the Fullmetal Alchemist anime based on Hiromu Arakawa's manga, we are shown a large number of unique characters, from brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric to evil homunculi like Envy and Wrath. There are also powerful military officers like Roy Mustang to crown prince Xing like prince Ling. But there's also Van Hohenheim, a key character who overshadows the entire plot of the series which was adapted into a live-action film and aired on the Netflix streaming platform.
Van Hohenheim has a close connection with the series' main villain Father, and his powerful alchemy abilities are no match for Father. He is also the father of Ed and Al. Granted, Ed didn't seem to like it that much. But Van Hohenheim is an interesting character, and here are 6 things new fans should know about this great alchemist, especially about his quirky personality.
1. His name is taken from the name of the Swiss Alchemist
The real-life historical source of inspiration for Van Hohenheim’s name is a 16th-century Swiss alchemist named Paracelsus. In his youth, he was known as Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus Van Hohenheim.
2. He Likes To Protect Others
This fact is one of Van Hohenheim's more remarkable personality traits. Although he is a loner who keeps to himself due to his strange nature and long life, he is kind to others and always ready to defend the innocent. He made sure that no one in Liore could reach the Pride tunnel and warned them of a "monster" there.
3. Despite being a great person, but he is always humble
Now, many people might have the impression that Van Hohenheim was a humble person, and that fact was true. Unlike Father, who had to rid himself of his sinful pride by creating a homunculus to contain him, Hohenheim had always been humble.
In contrast to Edward, Hohenheim never boasted or liked to show off, and many who met him had no idea how strong or formidable he was. Hohenheim was excellent at blending in with the everyday life of the people in Amestris, and he would even roll up his sleeves to help the people of Liore rebuild his neighborhood.

4. He Wanted A Good Death
Although a good death was an unnatural thought, Van Hohenheim had outlived the actual human lifespan. He had wandered the earth for centuries, and unlike Father, Hohenheim didn't want to be like a god. He wanted to return to his human form in any way he could.
He and Father were complete opposites when it came to immortality, and Hohenheim was ready to rest in peace. At the end of the series, Hohenheim gets his wish and makes peace with his family before he can finally physically age quickly and die the way he always wanted. He hoped to join Trisha wherever his wife was waiting for him.
5. He Saved The Human Side In Alchemy
This fact was the most important difference between Van Hohenheim and Father. Father often sees humanity as a victim for his various plans, as well as an ant to destroy. Yet Hohenheim fully understood that alchemy was made by humans, for humans, and there was nothing to separate alchemy from humanity.
In the scene of the two of them fighting, Father ambushes Hohenheim and tries to absorb the Philosopher's Stone only to resist. It did so because Hohenheim had spoken privately with 500,000 people related to the stone, and the stone gave it a serious edge. He warns Father not to underestimate the human side for good reason.
6. He Thinks Far Ahead
If you have ages as many as centuries with no end in sight, as Hohenheim did, you will surely learn to start thinking on a different scale. The people around Van Hohenheim are planning something for the next week or next month on his life. Yet Hohenheim was preparing for the end of the world.
This comes to fruition on the “Promised Day”, when Hohenheim's series of worldwide Philosopher's Stone implants are activated to slow down Father's plans. As for the reason Hohenheim left his wife Trisha because he was trying to find a way to die with his lover as an ordinary human.
