1. This Anime Explores the Shinigami Theme

As soon as Yusuke dies, he is greeted by Botan, a blue-haired shinigami who uses a broomstick to get around. She was under King Enma's orders. However, the king is on vacation and she has to deal with his son, Koenma, who takes care of the spirit world.

2. Featuring Elements of Japanese Mythology

During the four seasons of the anime, the characters of Yu Yu Hakusho must deal with a great demon inspired by a legend from Japanese mythology. For example, in Dark Tournament there are various Japanese mythological figures that the characters have to face. Also, the main core of the show itself has mythological elements, such as Kurama, which is based on the myth of the Japanese fox.

4. Yu Yu Hakusho is Considered One of the Best Anime

Yu Yu Hakusho won several awards during the airing of the anime series. In 1994 and 1995, the anime was named Best Anime of the Year by the Animage Anime Grand Prix. In 2016, 12 years after the story ended, Yu Yu Hakusho was voted by Japanese magazine Brutus as the sixth-best anime of all time.

5. There's a Reason Why This Manga didn't Start as a Fighting Manga

Yu Yu Hakusho's tone and genre changed dramatically over the course of the series. The story begins with a focus on what Togashi calls a 'good and heartfelt story' before finally focusing on fighting.

Togashi never really felt at home in the shounen genre. He personally prefers reading manga of various genres such as Garo, who specializes in avant-garde manga, and Hana to Yume, a shoujo manga genre. But when he tried to write a love story, he felt intimidated and decided to write a fighting manga, which he thought he could do and made his manga popular.

But since Yu Yu Hakusho will be his first combat genre manga, the editors don't want him to jump right into it either. He asked Togashi to start the storyline slowly and introduce more battles as the story progressed. When Togashi finally did just that, the series' popularity skyrocketed.

6. Yoshihiro Togashi Married Sailor Moon’s Author

One of the great curiosities that few fans of Yu Yu Hakusho know about is that Yoshihiro Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon, which became another hugely successful anime series in the 1990s.

In the Yu Yu Hakusho series, Yoshihiro Togashi also pays homage to Sailor Moon. In honor of his wife, creator Yu Yu Hakusho dressed his character Koenma in a costume that closely resembles the Tuxedo Mask, a popular character from the Sailor Moon series.
